Hi. I am new to openGL and was wondering what exactly is mip mapping? Could anyone explain or maybe direct my to a site that explains without confusion? Thanx in advance.

It means "Many images". Basicly all it is is that it lowers the level of detail of a texture the further away from the screen it is. If you look at many FPS games (suych as Q3), you''ll notice that on the floor the textures get blured the further away they are. Thats all it is.

In that case, it wouldnt make much sense to mip map something that is constantly close to the screen. Right?

You''re right, mip-mapping a GUI would be a quite stupid thing to do
