learning theory vs diving in

is it better to know all the basics/theory of C++ before diving into projects? im taking my sweet time learning C++ and its gonna take me forever!

Short answer yes.

More realistically, however, starting simple projects, can help you to learn the usage of basic programming theory in the real world. The only thing is to realize that you''re probably not (unless you''ll someday put Carmack to shame) going to write the ultimate FPS or MMORPG as your first project. Start small, write some puzzle games. Make a[n] (insert your favorite classic game here) clone.

My point is, learn the basics. But, there''s nothing wrong with learning by doing.

im not into games, only UI Design. I know the WIN32API because of my past VB experience, and ive done some C WIN32 application projects before...but like i said, im in the process of learning the more advanced topics, then some day apply that knowlesge to create/design custom control libraries. im a GUI freak!
