3D modeling tools that generate X file format

Are their any 3D modeling tools that generate X file format or at least 3ds so that I use conv3ds.exe to generate X files? I''m on a tight budget, any suggestions?
Milkshape3D isn''t free but it''s only 20$ after 30 days of a free trial. It''s not as complex as 3DSMax but it''s very applicatible when it comes to game development. You may also want to check out a program called Crossroads at http://home.europa.com/~keithr/crossroads/ because it allows conversions from and to various 3D formats.
