Is COM used anyway in game design besides Direct X?
I wish there was a button on my monitor to turn up the intellegince. Theres a button called 'brightness' but it doesn't work

I''ve seen plugable factories used before. Sometimes scripting engines have COM extensions. Sometimes games have COM extensions for the scripting engines.
COM is useful the same way it is useful for Direct3D: you can update your components without breaking older code.

The Crystal Space engine is based on native COM on the Windows platform, and an emulated COM on Linux systems.
