Character Texturing Workflow

Character Texturing Workflow When building a character for a game or any kind of realtime environment, there are many things to keep in mind. A while back we mentioned some pitfalls to avoid during the modeling stage, today we’ll talk a bit about UV mapping and texture painting. UV mapping is a rather tedious process, but it’s a requirement because it prepares the “canvas” for you to....

Is true time travel possible (in games)?

Is true time travel possible (in games)? I like time travel. The Embassy of Time is a big display of that. It is designed to include books (currently being written), comics (being slowly drafted), movies/animation (storyboards are being revamped from an earlier, failed attempt), and of course, games, like what I have talked about in here . But as is fairly common knowledge by now, games are a ve....

Upgrade Update: Reputation Feedback

Reputation. This is a tricky subject. The site upgrade - by nature of the upgrade - is going to introduce changes to our reputation system. There is no stopping the change. The current reputation system is custom-made and is not portable to the upgrade. This doesn't mean we couldn't port it, but it's a question of ROI. Some may perceive this to be a negat....

Foray into the who-knows-what...

Evening GameDev'ers! First journal entry for me at the community so I wanted to start off by saying I have no knowledge of game development whatsoever! Only about a week ago I started tossing around the notion of "what would it be like to develop games?" Lo and behold, a quick Google search brought me to GameDev.net, and as the saying goes: "Hook, line....

it's coming together

intEGA seems to be coming together now I've implemented the line raster algorithm, including anti aliasing which does not look good because of the sheer size of the raster elements. I'm considering dropping this feature. The circle shape has been dropped, since an ellipse is more generic there is no real need for a circle shape. An ellipse is only....

The First Steps

SHADOWS Finally, I'm ready to make another entry for this journal. I've been really looking forward to it. But I do not wish to add irrelevant progress updates or personal messages to this journal. Instead, I will set goals for each next entry. I believe this approach is to my advantage. I've been working on my ideas for this game for quite some time....

The plan

Ok so far the plan for learning how to program game goes as follows: 1. Finish my C++ module through Game Institute. 2. Move onto Game Institute's second C++ module. 3. Write a few small Text based C++ games to further my C++ knowledge 4. Move onto Game Institute's DirectX course/s. 5. Make a small DirectX game. 6. Take over world!! More details....

I love the morning!

Yeah, mornings rock when I don't have to work. Wednesday night we had a few tornados in the area, I lost power at about 7pm that night. Nothing big really, a few trees down and the usual. The damage from this was nothing compared to what is currently going on in the gulf. This is really about how I lost my last mornings of joy. Thursday came....

Just a note to say, I'm a GDNet member now!.

Welcome to GDNet+

So here's my first journal entry... it will probably be one of very few (I'm not much of a blogger). I finally joined GDNet+ a few days ago, mainly to support GameDev, but the yellow name and custom avatars are cool too [grin]. I haven't had much time between work and various side-projects to work on anything else, but maybe when I do get a....

In a lull of inspiration....

Ever since I stopped my 3D engine, I have been in a lull of inspiration. I just sit at my computer and stare at the screen. I need some kind of programming project, even if it is not game oriented. I am so bored with nothing to do it is driving me crazy. I am in a streak now of 4 days of work so I can't get out of the house till monday night. I so need....

My Trip to NYC

In my normal vein of babble. . . I went to New York last week with a friend of mine who happens to have a terminal illness. We had such a great time just chatting, seeing a few sites, eating pizza. I already miss the fabulous NY Pizza!! I got to see Seyi, and we had an excellent time talking- although I think the talk was slightly lopsided about my....

Particles!

Spent last night starting a particle system framework. I've made 3D particle systems in the past for rain, lighting, and sparks. With that in mind, I'm doing a 2D game, but trying to keep the core graphics library 3D-centric. Currently I'm working on the basic particle emitter types and then I'll tie them in with the particle system and particle....
