Upgrade Update: Reputation Feedback

Reputation. This is a tricky subject. The site upgrade - by nature of the upgrade - is going to introduce changes to our reputation system. There is no stopping the change. The current reputation system is custom-made and is not portable to the upgrade. This doesn't mean we couldn't port it, but it's a question of ROI. Some may perceive this to be a negat....

Early Art: Finding Efficient Style

Early Art: Finding Efficient Style Week 3 Gabe's Game On an indie team, being efficient with your time is important. As a solo developer, it's imperative. Traditionally, when adventuring into the early artist process for video games, you'll have piles of concept art, mood sketches, character concepts, often even prop art concepts. You'll find an art team deliberating over details in a....

Menacing Cubes Metamorphosize

In my LAST POST , I talked mostly about some of the pathfinding options that I came up with. One of these solutions involved relying on raycasting to determine a path to my player, which was a fun exercise and yielded some really entertaining gifs. However, I decided to scrap that system in favor of using Unity's built-in pathfinding system via the NavMes....

Journal Entry #7: Motivation?

Hello, I has been a while, I wish I could say that the time has been very well spent but, It has not, Well not most of it anyway. I have implemented a lot of systems and content into the game but that was done quickly compared to the time that I did not work on the game. Video headaches

I had really an awful time trying to put together a decent trailer video for the demo that I just released. Apart from all the trouble I had trying to figure out how to use various video editing tools, the quality of the uploaded video on youtube seemed very bad compared to what it should be, so I did some screen captures and compared the result side by....

Project Update 3 - Management

Project Update 3 - Management Estimate Work Like my other RTS project that is fully on hold at the moment, I finally made a full roadmap of my new project. The current scope of the roadmap is up until prototype. I started to slack a bit (since I'm building this at home and not full-time), I noticed I wasn't as productive again as when I've planned projects in the past. Playing games....

Things I've learned trying to draw grass.

1. you can draw a million animated plants with no culling using instancing with static instance data. dynamic data is another story ( 60 vs 23 FPS i7 6700K 4Ghz single thread, GTX1080 10-20% overclocked, vsync on at 60Hz, DX9 hardware instancing, single static vs single dynamic buffer, LOCK_WRITEONLY). Darklands and the Black Arts of Text

Darklands and the Black Arts of Text This piece was originally posted on my personal website blog yesterday, though I think it'd be appropriate to put here as well due to talking about some ideas that are particularly applicable to indie games. (I'll apologize here for the state of formatting in this entry; copy & pasted text is not playing nice.) To give a bit of background to the pos....
