1. Well, by the way the game I was looking to make a remake of was pong I just sent an email to Atari requesting permission. Hopefully that'll go well
2. Interesting well then, what about for the game pong? I see a whole bunch of little remakes all over on the web. Did they all get written permission from Atari?
3. Hello, As an example, let's say that I'm an indie game developer, and i'm looking to make a clone of Tetris. Now, if I call the game "Tetris Resurrection", will I be committing a copyright offense? Also, if let's say, in my advertising banners, I use the slogan "Tetris has been resurrected", could I get sued for that, or would I still be within legal bounds? Thanks And btw, this was just an example. I'm looking to make a clone of an arcade game but it's not tetris.

Quote:Original post by Cromulent Quote:Original post by hervens And can you comment on the speed? Speed is really an important issue here. You are self hosting. What happens if 50 people want to upload an image to your site simultaneously? It will destroy your DSL connection. There are reasons why self hosting is a bad idea and this is just one of them. How are you handling backups? I would be annoyed if I spent ages uploading pictures to a hosting site only to find out a week later that they had a hard drive crash and lost the lot. Do you have any off site backups? What about RAID in case a drive fails? That's the thing. If you read my previous post, I subscribed to a windows virtual private plan with vpsland.com. They give me 1gb dedicated ram, and 10gb storage.

Alright, I setted up the website on the vps host. Took me around 12 hours to set up, thanks to windows server's exagerated security measures, but it works Something I did notice though, is that when you first enter in the adress, www.shareApixel.com it seems to take a while to actually look for the server, and display the site. ( I guess the dns servers are probably a bit slow ), but once the website is loaded, everything else, such as loading it, and browsing the website is pretty fast.

Quote:Original post by grayaii I just tried viewing the gallery and speed wasn't an issue. They got displayed in a timely manner. I did notice duplicate images in the gallery. Is this a bug, or are there indeed duplicate images? Good luck with this! If this ever ends up making you money, you should definitely invest in a UPS or getting a dedicated host, so that if the power goes out or your computer crashes, the users won't complain... Hey, Thanks a lot for visiting my site. As for duplicated images in the gallery, this is normal due to the fact that all the images are displayed randomly. But if you think that could be an issue, I could change it pretty easily. But there's something I don't understand though. Just today, I received 110 unique visits to my site so far. 40 coming straight from gamedev.net, 20 from google adwords, and the rest from other random sites where i advertised. However, I only received 3 new uploads. I need users to UPLOAD images, and then paste the url on some forum somewhere to display the image, not just visit the site, eat up free bandwidth and then leave. Any suggestions?

Quote:Original post by phresnel I might be on a bad route or just have an unluckful day, but over the last 3 minutes I was always timed out upon trying to visit your site. Did you eventually make it to the site? And can you comment on the speed? It was probably when I was reconfiguring my dns server

hey Wan, thx a lot for testing the site out. as for removing the pics on the home page, im still hesitating, cause I think the site sorta looks plain without it. with pics without pics And ill change the logo to a hyperlink as soon as I figure out how to do it. ( the logo is actually a background image of the whole header area, configured in css )

Quote:Original post by jtagge75 Quote:Original post by hervens And Rayne: One of the reasons I decided to host the site myself is that I found the website to be just to slow on shared hosting and dedicated would cost just too much, considering im not making anything sort of revenue with this website. Also, I have a 100gb bandwidth cap with my isp, and If my site ever starts to get some nice traffic ( or my isp complains ), a simple phone call to my isp will give me their business plan, which allows hosting, and unlimitted bandwidht usage. So, i guess it all goes on weather or not my site gets popular. And if it does get popular, ill be ready for it. What happens if you go on vacation for a week or two and the power gets tripped off? Places like ImageShack got this kind of thing covered. Like Rayne said, its a cool idea you are doing this. But you are going to have to spend money if you want to compete with the bigger image hosting sites. If that is what you are wanting to do. I'm already spending money. I just added $80 to my google adwords accounts to try to advertise the site (not seeing any results yet ) I'm also planning on advertising with myspace. And as for reliability issues, your sort of right on that one. All I can do is hope, that the power won't get cut off, and that the site will be on 24/7

Thanks a lot for the review, I just changed it as you suggested, so that after you click upload, the website shows a thumbnail version of the image instead. So, things should be a bit faster now. But about the speed, im surprised that the website is slow. Im hosting the website on my computer ( the one im using now ), and it's pretty powerful. Quad core processor, 4gb ram, windows server 2008, etc. But o well, I guess its my connection speed ( 700kbps uplodad )

comon guys, what do you think of the site? How can I make it better? Am I wasting my time?
14. Hey, I just launched an image hosting website: http://www.shareApixel.com Please check out the site and tell me what you think! Would you switch from your current image host to mine? and why? Im also having a really hard time promoting the website. I signed up with google adwords ( with a $80 budget ), but im not seeing many new uploads. So any advice on that field would be appreciated also. I'd also appreciate it if I could have the support of gamedev.net users, to use my site whenever they need to attach an image to their thread. Thanks

[web] Feedback on my new website

Well, the site looks pretty simple. Why don't you add a logo at the top there? And I would probably change the purple color, for something a bit brighter, just to keep your users awake. But besides that, you just need a few users, and more content and ull be fine. Check out my image hosting site (I just launched it aswell) http://www.shareApixel.com We could become partners. You advertise me as a main image hoster for your forum, and ill place a link on my homepage to your site, in adition to host your users images cya
