newbie ? about Java SDK setup

If I want to use Eclipse, do I need to install JDK too? I was going to go to newwest version of JSDK 6 Is it different for IDE's? Will Eclipse contain all I need to start writing/compiling/running Java apps? Thanx

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

The method for compiling and running code should be the same way if all is configured correctly right? Sometimes I can run the class files that I store in C:\code\ but at other times, they won't run, unless they are in the bind folder, what gives? As stated above, the PATH and CLASSPATH variables are set(user only). Thoughts?

Weird thing happened. It was working fine when it started giving the error again about not being able to find the class file. I checked the environment variables again and everything is set properly. The only thing I can think of is that I only set the User variables, should I have set the System variables as well?

Nice Now I can place my code folder on the C:\ instead of a bin folder :)

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

Thanks That did it, the moment the Classpath pointed to the bin folder, I compiled the code and it displayed my text. I have the code folder in the bin folder so that way there won't be any problems. I will check out Notepad++, I forgot about that one. 0

Forgot to mmention that includding the class file in the bin folder also prouduced the correct results. How do I fix it so I don't have to type out the enttire pathway?

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

Maybe I am not setting the classpath right because when I use the set ClassPath= command and then trying running java Saluton, it displayed the message it was suppose to.

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

I figured out the problem. Looking it up on the Sun site, I needed to set up the User Path evriable and System Path and ClassPath variables, I am using the latest version(1.6) I got the files to compile so I assume that all is well Anyoe know a small text editor that displays line numbers? I like Notepad but it is lacking in that department.

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

Never mind, I fond it in Appendix A. Should I use the SDK version supported by the book or use the latest version on the site? I would assume the latest greatest version would have bug fixes and improvements. Just wondering if the excercises would work with the new version

newbie ? about Java SDK setup

Thanks Kind of, the Java folder I created to store my practice files. The book I have is the Teach Yourself series. Programming in Java in 24 hours. I did not see anything about installation help. The book uses Java 2 5.0 SDK, should I use that(comes on CD) or should I use the latest vversion which is Java 6 Update 5.0?
