  1. starting c#/.net, 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0?

Programming IDE:I suggest Microsoft C# 2008 Express which is free. Literature: O'Reilly's Head First C# , the best technical book I've had the pleasure of reading. Good luck
  2. Python IDE and plug-in recommendations?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to give Komodo a try.
  3. I'm looking to start learning Python. I am also learning C# but need to change up things once in a while to keep things from getting dull. Anyway I'm looking for suggestions on all things related to Python, which is the the most robust and helpful IDE preferred plug-ins suggested text's/books/tutorials I know Python.org is a good resource but would appreciate any feedback from the crew here as well.. and yes I used the search function here and reviewed most of the past Python posts;) Thanks kindly
  4. Don't know if this was ever posted before but found it while checking on errors regarding programming variables. Watch how you declare your variables or BAVOOM! Note in the linked page they have more disasters attributed to 'bad numerics' The Explosion of the Ariane 5 On June 4, 1996 an unmanned Ariane 5 rocket launched by the European Space Agency exploded just forty seconds after its lift-off from Kourou, French Guiana. The rocket was on its first voyage, after a decade of development costing $7 billion. The destroyed rocket and its cargo were valued at $500 million. A board of inquiry investigated the causes of the explosion and in two weeks issued a report. It turned out that the cause of the failure was a software error in the inertial reference system. Specifically a 64 bit floating point number relating to the horizontal velocity of the rocket with respect to the platform was converted to a 16 bit signed integer. The number was larger than 32,767, the largest integer storeable in a 16 bit signed integer, and thus the conversion failed. The following paragraphs are extracted from the report of the Inquiry Board. An interesting article on the accident and its implications by James Gleick appeared in The New York Times Magazine of 1 December 1996. The CNN article reporting the explosion, from which the above graphics were taken, is also available. On 4 June 1996, the maiden flight of the Ariane 5 launcher ended in a failure. Only about 40 seconds after initiation of the flight sequence, at an altitude of about 3700 m, the launcher veered off its flight path, broke up and exploded. The failure of the Ariane 501 was caused by the complete loss of guidance and attitude information 37 seconds after start of the main engine ignition sequence (30 seconds after lift-off). This loss of information was due to specification and design errors in the software of the inertial reference system. The internal SRI* software exception was caused during execution of a data conversion from 64-bit floating point to 16-bit signed integer value. The floating point number which was converted had a value greater than what could be represented by a 16-bit signed integer. *SRI stands for Système de Référence Inertielle or Inertial Reference System.
  5. starting a game developing career

Any college that awards Bachelor degrees usually have a job placement/career services office that assists their graduates in finding entry/junior level positions. Did you reach out to your college's placement office? Also try looking at Hotjobs.com and monster.com, I am sure you'll find tons of entry level cs stuff there.
  6. C# and XNA?

For a XNA book I recommend Microsoft XNA Game Studio Creator’s Guide I bought it a few weeks ago based on this forum's feedback. I've found it to be quite good, however I am only a quarter way through it thus far. [Edited by - Diosces on March 3, 2008 10:13:17 AM]
  7. Tektronix makes very good o-scopes, it's definitely a brand to consider. I used various Tektronix when I was doing audio/video repair. To get a better idea of the scope's performance I suggest: Email the seller and ask them if they could send you a screenshot with one channel displaying a sinusoidal waveform and the other channel a square waveform, with frequencies at about 80% of the scope's max freq. I believe that scope is a 4 channel scope. Good luck on your purchase.
  8. C# and XNA?

The Current XNA software only works with C# 2005 for now. That said you can have installations of both C# 2005 express and C# 2008 express working on the same PC. I was using 2008 and then installed 2005 to use XNA. As Nick mentioned, the XNA forums are vey helpful.
  9. Gotcha Tela. Thanks, I now understand.
  10. [web] Good HTML editor

Great thread, I'm using NVU now but definitely gonna try all the other IDE"s recommended here. Thanks
  11. Fresh Start a little advice please

Blewisjr, May I then recommend Microsoft XNA Game Studio Creator’s Guide ? I bought it a few weeks ago based on some feedback. I also had a half price borders Books coupon so it was pretty inexpensive purchase. I've found it to be quite good, however I am only a quarter way through it thus far.
  12. As topic indicates I'm looking for a free, Easy to use website designer for Microsft based hosting account. Something with blogger capabilities like WordPress (which is suited towards Linux I believe?) would be ideal. Been like 10-12 years since I've done anything with website design so I'm trying to keep it simple while all my excess brainpower goes into learning C#, C++ Thanks kindly
  13. Maybe consider using a SQL table to store location values to make it easier? Like the other poster said, depends on what language you are using..
  14. Thanks for the feedback guys. Tela I try to keep that all in mind. I think a quarter of of it went over my head. Porthos, thanks I will try the getters and setters..Very good point. As for "Direct access to the members of an object from another object's scope is normally not the best choice."--The book makes that their choice(books code is in comments). Mine increments off the GiveCash function which I thought was safer..
  15. Fresh Start a little advice please

As Visual C# 2005 Express and XNA are both free and very widely used (and supported) I decided to use them both for my programming/learning foundation. For a first book I strongly recommend O'Reilly Head First C#. It's really an excellnet read and teaches in a fairly fun and novel approach compared to other technical/programming books I've read. Keep in mind that MS C# 2008 Express doesn't work with XNA, you need the 2005 C# package however you can have both versions installed. I have both installed side by side on the same PC with no issues. If I decide later I can always pick C++ again, but I doubt I will need to.
