      Download the Game Design and Indie Game Marketing Freebook   07/19/17

      GameDev.net and CRC Press have teamed up to bring a free ebook of content curated from top titles published by CRC Press. The freebook, Practices of Game Design & Indie Game Marketing, includes chapters from The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, and An Architectural Approach to Level Design. The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. We know game development can be a tough discipline and business, so we picked several chapters from CRC Press titles that we thought would be of interest to you, the GameDev.net audience, in your journey to design, develop, and market your next game. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. Personal Information

  1. It's a game engine.
  2. Hey Josh,   You still using Banshee? If so is there a site with tutorials on how to use it?   Thanks!
  3. Josh, As usual bad ass! Man you have talent! Keep up the great work! :)
  4. coolbeans!   Good to see you are still at it Josh!! I wish I had more time myself to code... :(
  5. I am looking for math books that are quality reading, and hardcover if possible that will allow me to teach my self math from algebra all the way to advanced calculus and I also want a math book that will allow me to understand all the math symbols and usage of them and notations and what and why they are used.... is this even out there? I been to college and had math through Calculus 15years ago and loved it, but have never pursued getting my math degree and now it's on my mind to get a B.S. in Mathematics. I would like to buy some good books to reteach myself and understand better the math language as a whole.   e.g. where and why to use super script sub scripts or when and why to use the square root or power functions... also trig and geometry math I would like books that cover these topics as well.   So I am looking for peoples who have a BS in Mathematics or have pursed this route on their own already and have these great books and want their recommendations.   Thanks!
  6. thanks!!! that did the trick!
  7. I am not 100% sure how to do this but guessing sin() and cos()? I am lost on what the correct formula is to move planet's node around my sun...   Thanks!
  8. I am using sfml-tmxloader to load the .tmx maps from tiled and when I call    sf::Vector2f size = window->getView().getSize(); ml->UpdateQuadTree(sf::FloatRect(0.0f, 0.0f, size.x, size.y));   //get a vector of MapObjects contained in the quads intersected by query area sf::Vector2f mousePos = window->mapPixelToCoords(sf::Mouse::getPosition(*window)); //NOTE quad tree MUST be updated before attempting to query it   std::vector<tmx::MapObject*> objects = ml->QueryQuadTree(sf::FloatRect(mousePos.x - 10.f, mousePos.y - 10.f, 20.f, 20.f));
  9. Anyone know of a good tutorial on using this lib to load the objects from a map? I can't seem to find anyway to look at custom properties you set in tiled with this lib? or if the lib will draw these objects or do I need to setup the code to do this also?   Update... look like I can use this to query the properties? std::vector<tmx::MapLayer>& layers = ml->GetLayers(); for (auto& l : layers) { if (l.type == tmx::ObjectGroup) { for (auto& o : l.objects) std::cout << o.GetPropertyString("TextureFilename") << " UID = " << o.GetPropertyString("UID") << "  TEXID = "  << o.GetPropertyString("TEXID") << " POS = " << o.GetPosition().x << " | " << o.GetPosition().y << std::endl; } }
  10.   sfml-tmxloader only requires SFML.   Works great so far!    Thanks!
  11.   sfml-tmxloader only requires SFML.   Thanks I will take a look

  13. I am looking for something that I can just drop into my project to load maps based on .tmx files and render the map.   Any good libs that are current and not needing ten million external libs? or something that has all the libs pre built if they need lots of external APIs/libs to compile...   Thanks!
  14. Thanks wintertime!
  15. I am new to SFML and was wondering if I use a renderlist and just want to render the whole list, how can I avoid call window.draw() 10 million times?   Is there some array call that one can send the whole list in one function call?   Thanks!   Oh and what is the correct way to setup a list to hold the many render types in SFML?   Is this correct? std::list<sf::Drawble*> renderList;
