I actually have a book for learning c++ from the maker of c++ himself. I'll put that to good use as well.
  2. Hello everyone, I'm deciding to learn c++, more indepth than I do at the moment. I have 2 OpenGL programming books in c++ and would definitely like to read them, though, I'm concussed on wether I should start with SDL and making normal windows applications. Any advise? Thanks, for any help.
  3. Hello everyone, I saw a couple of articles on wikipeadia and other places about rotating shapes using Matrix. I do not have much experience with Matrix in general, but I can do my reasearch. Now the thing that I would love to make is, kind of my own rotating shape, from scratch in java. I mean drawing everything without any help from any library and then using a rotational matrix (Sorry if the name is wrong!) and make a 3D picture. I already have done 2D graphics. I would just love to go through the work and understand how exactly it works. Thanks for the help, if possible.

[/quote] Thank you, I'm currently designing 2D games in Java but since I'm liking the subject I will challenge myself to learn the required math. I really do not have much math experience (I'm now starting as a college freshman, first math will be Precalculus). Also, thanks for the books I will look into the reviews and which might benefit me more.

Your display is 800x600 pixels. Your level can be much bigger than that (if you want to be able to scroll around the level as your character runs around). Your level should be of any size. It will be some number of tiles high and some number of tiles wide. You can model this as a Level object, which can contain the 2-dimensional tile array. [/quote] Your help was not a waste, . I'm learning how to use the array to check for collision ( and it's actually coming out better than before) I still don't know how to make the level bigger than the screen size, but I've notice that if I try to figure things out I do (this crappy simple game is an example) I will try to update the process through videos frequently, once again thanks. I'm randomly generating red blocks which are 32 x 32. Now you say use a 2 dimensional array. I understand how to make them but if my screen is 800 x 600 does that mean I would check every 32x32 area for a block?

Are you asking, "how do I detect collisions between the game character and the walls?" If so, please clarify your question. There are many ways construct a level. For a simple platform game, a grid of tiles will suffice. We can help you better if you can provide more specifics. [/quote] Thanks for replying thok and sorry if my question is not very understandable ( English is my second language ) To my believe,yes, it is detection of character and walls or blocks. I sometimes draw images with lines and I really don't understand how could make a collision detection system.

I was seeing the following video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZaKd5BG0mI&feature=channel&list=UL, and I asked myself "How is the collision being made with multiple walls, in different places"? When I usually do collision detection it is a square and the boundaries of the frame. Now I would like to make a level and the way I did this was with a picture, are there other ways? If so what are those?

I have tried making games ( Which I never finish), and physics simulation using graphics which I enjoy. Some games have resources that need to be built and compiled like regular code. Some games have resource editors that do all the work for you when you save. The game developer or modding community for the game will provide those tools to you. Most games will have communities with active modders and sometimes with members of the game's development team. I'm trying to make something with saurbraten but I can't seem to find any tutorials. If you guys can recommend anything please post it. By the way why whenever people make maps they are called a mod aswell? Does any programming go into it?
  15. Hello forum, right now I'm challenging myself to make a good allegro basic circle movement without any tutorials . So there is one thing that I want to implement into my code and that is, printing the x and y coordinates to the screen. For multiple purposes . I tried the textout but I really don't know how to make the program print the variable , here is what I tried.
