    Need a new name...

Hello. I need a new name for my 'Game studio' (really it's just me :/). I had venom interactive first, but it just didn't sound right - so then I went for lvl2 games which is the best I came up with. then it turned into vortex games - which was already taken, now I'm currently at Trinity Games, which is taken by triniti games on the app store on the iphone. It's not a MAJOR worry (I keep that back for the games) but I'm never satisfied... I have thought about other querky names, like "Leg Of Lamb Games" which gets shortened down to "LOL", or maybe "Brutal" My current logo is here : http://postimage.org/image/5pizyz9gt/
  2. Oh - just put on a jumper
  3. Is it me or is there an increase of illegal motorcyclist out there? Just riding home from work, I've seen multiple riders without any helmets or gear, bikes without no registration numbers, tons of dirt bikes without road tyres and back lights, every 50cc scooter sounds louder then a Harley 883... one ass drove through town going 40 thinking he's on a hit and run mission I think... the last time I saw a police man or woman was in 1999.

Advices for a student completely new to game dev

I've been studying programming since I was 12, learning C++, python, C# , java , haskell and lua - now 18, I still have absolutely no idea how to program.    www.cprogramming.com is a great resource to start off. It teaches you the syntax of C++ which is the easiest part. however it's STL , IPC , Multi-threading, OpenGL etc, is when it starts getting hard.    I don't think you'll ever stop learning in the software development scene. But that why I love it so much.   GamePlay 3D    It's a new game engine "framework" written in c++ - with support for Android, Windows, Linux , iOS and Black Berry OS.  It's free and open source - the code is beautiful - use it - extend it - it's awesome.   here's the website :  www.gameplay3d.org   EDIT : Oh, and don't be a numpty - use Ubuntu. Windows is far to annoying for me personally. Then again, the reason I studied programming is primarily Linux, not game design - so I am a bit bias. (The OUYA has got my interest as of late :D)

    Torque3D now....FREE? Woah... 0_o

Just headed onto the garage game's website to check out how the guys are doing with torque, to find this banner ^. Aparrently now, Torque 3D is FREE, and you can take a look at the source code on github - even better - you can compile it on and for linux . The MIT license I believe allows you to sell the games running the engine to others WITHOUT distributing your's or the engine's source code.... pretty cool eh?  (BTW Is this new? has the news been passed around already? I have No idea?)    Yeah, it may not be Cryengine 3 or UDK - but it allows us to atleast see how things are done and mod the back side out of it, till we can call it are own   (image copied from the garage games website, and thus remains garage game's property)
  6. I'm wet , cold, and have lost all sensation in my ball bag. But at least I've got my motorcycle license.

Plus - anyone else looking to build games on a budget, ID Tech 4 is free too with access to source code - it once powered (and I suppose, still continues to power) Doom 3 , and Quake wars! Again - old news I know... but... just so you guys know.

    Game Animations 101?

Hey their, Nathan here. I apologize if this is a common question , I have yet to see someone asking for help with game animations. I am using Unity3D to build a 3rd Person open world survival adventure game. I am struggling to see how animations are "Sewn" together, and I actually rather really respect animators is a funny sort away. I'm just looking for some answers really. I have a rather primitive walk animation cycle, and a idling cycle for my character , but I would like more details with more miscellaneous animations. I'm currently looking at having a wolf attack the character as an enemy , and I want the character to wrestle with the wolf... how would this be done? how would I animate this inside 3dsMax or unity? how would the animations blend? would I animate the character and the wolf separately? I have been also thinking about having huge trolls that would knock over trees in the game, also for the ability for the character to climb trees... Am I getting over my head with this? - the only thing I can think of is using an ik engine for the climbing trees part. I don't know how devs do it in Uncharted , Tombraider or Assassins Creed (that is procedural animations.) I just have a vision of a really awesome game - the best game - and I want to play it disparately , despite it doesn't exist yet Please tell me other people get this feeling too?(want to play awesome games you made up that don't exist yet.) Thanks for your time. Nathan.
  9. Sebastian Cole - What an absolute Legend. Best Concert, I , and I think 7 other billion people will ever see. I actually had a dream once - Queen , 'We Will Rock You' Starring Jessie J - never dream't as big is that though!

  12. Hey, - not too sure whether to post here or the multi-player/networking section - that of which seems to be mostly down to implementation, so I posted here instead. My Name's Nathan. I am just searching to find out, what Xbox Live really is? I have been to various of sources and they just state what Xbox Live is, but not, what it is. (if you get me?) I mean - do Xbox Live game run on Xbox Live servers? - when playing call of duty , I have had trouble with time out issues - yet this doesn't effect whether I'm logged into Xbox Live or not? What I'm trying to find out is... are matches hosted on Xbox Live servers? Or are matches just Peer 2 Peer? - various games have "Hosts" - which suggest peer to peer?(not forgetting I'm no networking graduate(really, I have no clue about networking(just read a book once))). I wouldn't imagine game studios paying 100's of millions of pounds out of servers - however, I could be wrong. so, yeah... Thanks for your time. Nathan.

Name for Open Source Game Platform?

Hey their. Currently working on a project trying to introduce a Linux based Operating system for game consoles and media centers (something simular to XMBC) Anyway, I just wanted to name the project something. I'm currently working on creating a basic linux system, then building a custom window manager based around HQ's and then build a user frame work and writing some api for games and stuff. All good. Anyway, just need a name? here are some I've come up with : Lumbella Rocket RocketLolly Nuke GameFrame Photon Hadron Electron Paris Las Vagas Nitrogen Diamond Zyborg LegOfLamb Thor etc....

Name for Open Source Game Platform?

The Final name? Dynamite.... A friend of mine liked it so much that he even made a logo: http://postimage.org/image/t4j0gn4q5/ BTW : No - no reference to the band - just thought a random thought.

    How does Xbox Live work?

Brilliant! thanks. I really never knew their was that much effort involved. I've researched a little bit more, and apparently most games are P2P ie , player acts as host and processes the game - clients get the feedback from the hosts system. apparently Xbox Live just host the IM client , reputation system, gamerscore , Marketplace purchases and friends list - which is pretty cool.
  17. Hmm... Just been rethinking through my options. I have to go to college to see my new tutor Wednesday, and the rest of the ppl who will be in my class. I dunno - electronics really for me? - wish I studied music more, or geography - or Art - or.... Decisions, Decisions...

A Concern Regarding Operating Systems and Technical Influences

Yeah alright, little bit of a troll. Linux is just soo much unbelievably faster then windows, it's unreal. Again saying that, nothing is much slower either... Trolling? Proof? Mac , Linux - my G4 powermac boots and launches photoshop faster then my PC gets to the login screen. Anyway... All I know is if It has "Made by MICROSOFT" printed on it - it's usually terrible : Windows Mobile - terrible Windows Phone 7 - terrible Windows Azure - look pretty good actually Windows 8 - terrible Hotmail - terrible. Silverlight - Used to like that, but has been discontinued. Xbox - Best thing they've done. Microsoft will ruin it , I'm sure of it. And plus XNA really all that good? - tried it but the projects that come out of it seem very 'weekend'y - and I know a lot of these people spend months on them. Trolling? Hmm...maybe - actually yes, trolling. But you can't say that I'm not right - I am right.

A Concern Regarding Operating Systems and Technical Influences

What does the above post actually add? oh, right...nothing.... Like Windows? good for you... all I know is Microsoft is failing. I have got a WP7 mobile - frankly it sucks - has very little growth in comparison to Android (**Cough**Linux**Cough**) or iOS(**Cough** UNIX **Cough**) I have also tried windows 8 - very good, you get use to the metro UI , although I prefer the out and through PC OS - instead of a tablet/PC hyrid - look like your stuck with that for another, what 5/6 years? good luck with that. EDIT: And Whats gets me, the CEO of microsoft gets a failing platform (WP7) - takes it's concept and applies it to their flagship product! what an idiot! didn't anyone tell him! no one wants metro! (apart from the 13year old microsoft fanboys and girls.)

A Concern Regarding Operating Systems and Technical Influences

To add just another note - Windows was built from the ground up to look pretty for the consumer market.... Linux was built from the ground up to get S*** done. if you were a good programmer you would notice the difference. Windows API's is over complicated and slow. Linux development is easy to understand and fast. "Hahaha - you can't make a Processor go faster ,young padawan, but you can however make it do less..." - just throw that in there to (microsoft style... ;D)

A Concern Regarding Operating Systems and Technical Influences

I think we should go back to the roots of the thread. I suppose the point was - why are operating systems so slow and unoptimized? - why are programmers so lazy and uncaring about the software they write ? This is evident with the comparison between a Commodore 64 and Windows Computer - A Commodore 64 can display a whole video game in 64k while windows can bearly display "Hello world" on the screen. And it ain't just Windows... What I hate about Windows? it's just in general slowwer then linux - ubuntu is alot more snappy and reliable - you don't have Norton360 constantly f***ing your filesystem to find any viruses - I don't have to wait seconds for windows to find my directories on linux - they display instantly - I love the EXT3 filesystem and how flexable and fast it is in comparison to NTFS - I love BASH to the grave - I can run the programs I love without the aid of cygwin. I have G++ and NASM and GCC and GLIBc ... I have the aid of all the great communities of linux - nobody hates linux - linux IS the community - you design what YOU like (not what MS likes). you use the API's YOU want - you get the source code to many projects , and learn from some of the best programmers in the world. I'm not saying you can't with windows - it's just... Linux is a community - Windows is a Company. Bitches VS Friends - I know which side I'd choose... And yes - it does matter what GUI your platform is running - GUI is the only interface your users have to your program (unless it's a daemon/service or console application) - bad GUI - bad experince - bad application... Less profits.... Windows won't last forever. like someone said - Darwin - Survival of the fitest - Windows is losing users and programers and linux is repeaing in the limelight, due to the steep access you need to own a Macintosh system (seriously - Apple has lost there mojo with Mac). I read an article about a year ago about how Linux development has boosted and will soon out grow Windows developement. Once Linux has a decent attraction for general purpose users, it won't be long until companies by the likes of Dell and HP will start deploying linux to various of there platforms (Dell has already done so before...). Somehow, I think Google will drive the spear...

A Concern Regarding Operating Systems and Technical Influences

Hey Reflenux. Nice to see you taking an interest in Linux/UNIX development. I frankly don't know why people put up with the S*** from Microsoft - windows is a terrible operating system. I'm currently working on a project to promote linux - building an open source operating system for game consoles and media centers. Linux is great - having the freedom to dissect the whole system is something that has become essential for me to become a better programmer. The only issue is X windows (X11) - it's currently the windowing system standard for linux - and it...well... sucks - it's slow and takes alot ofresources , however needed if you want to develop games. the most annoying thing is, it's in the hands of Nvidia and AMD - there the ones who deside what api to use for there drivers - they won't change to there's a better system , yet you can't build the system until they change... anyway... yeah. Linux - it's awesome.
