    Doom Game Challenge : þoom

I see the playing field populating and players taking their turns... Special thanks for this particular challenge opportunity. Full disclosure, I've actually never played Doom. Which made this first week a research exercise. Sorry JohnC and crew, but wow...I'm put back in anticipation of what may be to come from the quantity of declared participants. So tally-ho, everyone in on the ride. I'm going the raycaster route to stay more in key, with an old wolfenstein clone framework from an early gameinstitute.com, Perlin Noise and AI Seminar offerings by Author : JohnDeGoes(12-15 years ago). One of the graphics items Doom brought to the table were textures on the ceiling and floor. A concept my chosen framework is unaware. This go, I'd like to do a proper AI agent type or two. Also on the todo list is a simple sprite animation atlas tool that is feed from targeted screen grab so I can render the art instead of doing pixel art or photo persuasion, but mostly hand packing image sequences is such a chore. I'd like to open this project up to others. Right now I'm thinking heavy guitar loops for game play. It would be nice to have a sound guy of the programmer persuasion and an ai guy. Lets talk. ...but after kicking the can for more than a while, the flame piddled out. I've had this project collecting dust for a decade and thought it would be a good idea to start from wolfenstein to transition to doom. Then I was umm...whatever, I've done enough 2D...moving onward. Here I'm showing the abandoning and rebirth starting with a nice modular wall asset gem from the unity store and a first stab at some licks. Makes me happy.

    Doom Game Challenge : þoom

Found an old gem from where this hobby of mine all started with MrGameMaker. It's funny the things you miss that were there the entire time. I'm turning out to be more of a spectator it appears now, but the spirit of the challenge is doing it's job by requiring me to do new things, research deeper and try. Actually, I wanted to say at some point that you've been a huge positive influence with your recent moves. Skinning, IK, 3D painting and animation have always fascinated me. My heads been in the Collada format for a few days now because I'm an ogl fanboy and I want to get my hands on raw skinning/animation data without assimp or worse... The video above was a shameless dump to get a couple of real instrument notes out to the wild, so if you said, "sounds fantastic"

all right. If your animated sprites are walking now, you could look at jumping and falling. If your animated sprites are flyers or top down view, you might skip ahead to pursue and evade behavior from an enemy. Both could use more thought into how you feed and care for your collision system.

That other thread is going get closed...How's it going in here. Were you able to build FlatUI.
  6. private void OnResize(object sender, EventArgs e) { var clientArea = _gameWindow.ClientRectangle; GL.Viewport(0, 0, clientArea.Width, clientArea.Height); _projectionMatrix = Matrix4.CreateOrthographic(clientArea.Width, clientArea.Height, -1, 1); } private void OnLoad(object sender, EventArgs e) { //_projectionMatrix = Matrix4.CreateOrthographic(3, 3, 0.001f, 50); // remove me . . . // scale vertex array to be in pixel space what about passing the actual screen size values to CreateOrthographic...does that change anything? (1pixel::1unit)
  7. How about your model matrix uniform...is that in a garbage state because it's commented out client side? What does that log?

I think a fun exercise for you would be to examine bitmap font rendering then or better yet. That would tie in nicely with your recent animated sprite work. Good Luck.

can you please ask that in a more specific way. I'm assuming you don't want the default os gui provided but instead hardware rasterized elements. Do you think that 2D gui elements are not rectangles just like sprites? Do gui elements not require vertices and a position on screen just like sprites? If you change the texture of one of your sprites to something that appeared gui-ish, would you be able to tell the difference if you were also checking for mouse screen clicks and responded with an action on a detected good click within the gui image rectangle? I encourage you to please review some existing gui libraries to get a feel for different approaches, then come back and tell us what you liked and didn't like.

you could take the recommendations of the [khronos.org wiki] in the "OpenGL initialization : Context/Window TOolkits" section, under widget toolkits. But in your case, I feel it would be fine to build your GUI in a manner similar to your sprites because I suspect button behavior, a text entry field and perhaps icon drag and drop would be the height of your needs. Reinventing the wheel is rarely a good idea, but I think you may do well to get your hands dirty a little with this to perhaps appreciate existing libraries. If that proves too difficult, the other approach would be a [ youTube search : openGL c++ gui tutorial ]. Review some of these, collect your thoughts and then we can continue a meaningful conversation on common ground... The reality is, you may need to try a few options to know what will be best for your project.

    new ideas for video games.

Hello @game bug, nice to meet you and welcome to the party. If you need someone else to do it, that could get expensive.

..trying a re-wording. what do other games have that your game does not? (menu, scoring, pause, replay, sound, enemy AI, state manager/listener, some refactoring (remove duplicating the quad draw code...?)

  16. Hello. I hunted for it twice but I can't say I found it. Unless it's the post process item. [This Video] talks about volumes. but only helps when the camera enters/approaches which might be cool when passing through the arch. Then there was [this] portal idea when looking through the arch...might be a lot of work doing things twice as suggested in the lesson.

    Doom Game Challenge : þoom

oh I know that one dude...I'm in scattered pieces over here. My easy(ish) idea was poo-poo'ed as a already made approach I'm suspecting, the Unity idea is real pretty and even easier path. A couple days ago, I had the itch to play with ogl and was reminiscing with opengl-tutorial.org. One of my favorites and kicking around a couple of ideas. (of sort) I've never actually implemented bsp sorter, so...

Have you tried to use the debugger to step through your code and watch your variables behave as expected?

    sprite collision

That. Feels broken. Perhaps think the other way around. Instead of focusing outside the potential overlap area, reverse it. Redesign not to test that it isn't, like you do currently, but to test that it is. (Hunt: && instead of ||) Whoops...I thought there was a collision issue...my fail...I'm blinded by the magic numbers.

I'm happy to focus here. I recognized the timing in the latest version and noticed the additional pose markers toward the end with an anticipation of the female character about to take charge from my perspective. This is nice. As if in the gallery sippin' tea, talking shop To work in this fashion is interesting. I imagine as story progresses, more opaque poses fill the gaps.

    Seattle Indies Expo

Today I experienced the Seattle Indies Expo featuring a wide array of games being made in my own community. It was nice to see so many proud developers and for good reason. A few dozen games were on the floor of all types. There were a couple fun looking 3D puzzle games, 2D tile rendering rpg, an ocean sailer, spring physics zinger thing, some happy casuals and a heavy hitter hyper real 3D scifi first person sim. Stunning visual appeal. The developer was a joy to talk to. The crowd was so pleasant. An amazing community.

  23. Hello. I share this ambition. Art is my driver, so I learned to code to bring it to life. Our styles are similar and those are my tools as well. I picked up a copy of zbrush4r5 when it was fresh, then 4r7 came out immediately after with the zModeler stuff. sigh... I mostly use zBrush for polypainting and quick forming. As blender tools improved I actually found myself staying more in Blender except for painting and certain map bake processes.. I'm located in the Ballard industrial district in Seattle right on the canal a couple miles east of the locks. Feel free to hit me up if you want to chat.

Its difficult to be kind here, so we should leave it at that. I do enjoy the engagement, I actually very much want to continue the discussion because I believe you to have some good things to say. I would love your opinion on some of my stuff. But to answer, those words are real. That is what I see when I look at this sequence. I may not agree technically, but I respect the art form and what its attempting to convey.

Thank you. I appreciate that. I like the obvious hint of desire and fury denial within a relationship eternal. But that's just me.
