Download the Game Design and Indie Game Marketing Freebook   07/19/17

GameDev.net and CRC Press have teamed up to bring a free ebook of content curated from top titles published by CRC Press. The freebook, Practices of Game Design & Indie Game Marketing, includes chapters from The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, and An Architectural Approach to Level Design. The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. We know game development can be a tough discipline and business, so we picked several chapters from CRC Press titles that we thought would be of interest to you, the GameDev.net audience, in your journey to design, develop, and market your next game. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. 2. Hello kind Dev's  My father bought a new machine, which came with windows 8, but he had asked me to take it off and dual boot windows 7 and windows xp to it,So i got the windows xp disk and went up to install that 1st so i had went through the Xp setup and formatted the drive and made 2 partitions and installed xp on the smaller partition, so after i installed and setup xp which works fine now, i went and tried to install windows 7 but when i tried to install windows 7 on the other partition it told me the disk was mbr and needs to be gpt now the only issue is i cannot convert it... i tried using tools and cmd but it cannot change it.. any idea on what i could do to fix and run those 2 os's dual boot?
  3. Wow this is some incredible feed back thank you everyone, and now i will give him the right stuff in fact ill take him to the forum and have him read this for him self the funny thing is i didn't tell him i am going to do this. I really do would like to thank each and everyone of you again though for you'r kind replies and great inspirational stories especially the the stories it's not everyday a stranger open's up to help someone along with sharing their personal experiences. That is also the big reason why i came here because great dev's look out for each other :) you have given hope and in times of desperation that is one of the most valuable emotions to posses right now so goodbye i hope i always run into people like you, for troubles of other's and my self.
  4. ill tell you one thing the kid love's 3d modeling hes a blender addict and does some pretty good stuff as he's more visual but the logic just isn't coming in , and please don't say that lmao were trying to find way's to help him mainly in the math area.
  5. Hello All For This Topic I Would Like To Ask The Following To Help A Family Member With Big Dreams but lacks the skills in mainly math  :   1. How would you motivate this young soul who stopped trying because he's absolutely horrid at math ,sophomore(10th grade) in High school to pursue his dreams as a mobile game developer .   2. How do i convince him that he dosent need to be a math expert to do game development... i already told him about engines not needing any hard programming at all how ever he feels if he can't do it like the big guys in the industry then its not worth it.   3. What Books would you have him study for his math issues he said he's only decent in algebra everything else in higher math levels he fails. (he hasn't showed me any proof he even knows algebra well enough but ill trust him that he knows something in it and i will be buying these books for him so lets not go wild here :).   )   4. How do we Make him Interested in actually wanting to learn often because he said he will often lose focus and not do much math at all because its boring.
  6. Wow thanks for the speedy reply but i would imagine allot of texture loss in anything smaller than 512 another question. When mapping in my uv editor can i have uv's overlapping each other to share texture's, and i mean :   lets say i have a small building for example and it has :   2 window's 3 walls and a door   can i have the two window uv's on top of each other and have the 3 wall's do the same? I am aiming at the unity 3d engine would this be a problem for for mobile's ? also what could you tell me about light mapping what sizes should i keep those ? or do you suppose it would be best to just bake the shadow's in my 3d package.
  7. Hello friends :     i am wondering how you pro's might go about texturing game building's inside and out for decent android phone's and ios device's basically the average casual mobile gamer device.   What techniques would you use?   What size texture maps?    and what are some thing's to avoid?
  8. Well 3Ddreamer thanks for you reply however im considering blender or Modo at this point and thanks too Serapth maybe i should still keep using blender and just to add to this i am not only going to use the 3D app for game development in unity but also in 3ds max i did architectural visualization and still do none commercial as a way to build up a client base .
  9. Hello Friend's   I am someone who has been working with 3DS max for about 3 year's mainly through high school.   I will say this and i have said it too many time's i love the speed and workflow in max and i don't want to leave it, however the price tag/($3,500)  is not exactly doable at this time.   I need something commercial and more friendly to my young wallet, i was using blender however the time difference to model something in blender and the extra steps needed to do the job vs what it would take in max make's me feel like i might be able to achieve better in something else close to max in a sense of ease of modeling with a more comfortable price tag.   So to clarify this do you think Modo the $1495 package is a good choice from someone like me with a good 3ds max background i am sure there are artist here with many year's more experience than i do and are lurking around being as great as you are so please you'r advice will be much appreciated, and also   what are something's modo's does better than max and what are some of the thing's of which you like and find other programs similar cannot achieve.   Thank you ,looking forward to some great replies.
  10. Wow thank you so much Khantarr , that was exactly the problem i am so releaved now, you really are a good person that know's his stuff may you get far in life :). Now as for me ill make a good clean up on this machine and use the knowledge gained in the future if i ever need to again.
