    "You're Not Alone" Cover

    Pretty nice composition. I agree that the samples sound dry, but aside from that, the fact that there aren't many articulations also give it an artificial feel. Maybe try fiddling more with velocity and modwheel.   When you obtain the EWQL, try experimenting with different articulations, ModXfd and round-robin patches.   If you ask me, I'd save some more money and go for a more advanced library than East West. I know it's bloody expensive, but try Vienna. I think it really is superior to EWQL.   LASS also has much better legato than East West. But be prepared to spend quite a lot of time setting the metadata right.   Kristoff

    By 3rd party tools, do you just mean external samples/VSTs/instruments, or are there other tools/plug-ins to be considered? Is in common to need to use external plug-ins, or do some DAWs include all needed functionality out of the box? I meant VSTs and samples. However now, that you mentioned it, there is also a function in many DAWs called Rewire. What it basically does, is connect other DAWs to your current one. Quite common to see a Reason rewired to some other DAW, like Cubase for instance. And yes, most of the time, external tools are required for real pro sounds. I know DAWs like Cubase or Logic love to brag about how well supplied are their libraries... but let's be straight - they have their limits. And believe me when I say, you really can hear when some instruments sound artificial. Kristoff

    I must disagree with the concept, that choosing the right DAW is crucial; it's the external tools that you use within the DAW really matter. The thing I really pay attention to, is how stable the DAW is when handling 3rd party tools. And this brings me to my second point. Some workstations, like Logic, have big sound libraries. While I agree that those libraries might do the trick in some cases, you shouldn't really rely that much on them. If we're all aiming to be professionals, then our works must sound top notch. That might be just my conservative point of view, but I think, that realistic instruments can't be pulled of with a daw's native libraries. My point is, that you shouldn't look for a DAW that has the biggest library. Instead focus on a DAW that can handle 3rd party instruments with ease. For instance, I really love Cubase 5, but I often found its lack of stability with some VSTs very troublesome. Kristoff

    Sound Programming from Scratch

    This might be totally irrelevant to your interest, but have you considered making your own ensembles in Reaktor 5? I know this isn't quite what you are looking for, but still, it could be helpful to learn about the signal flow in some particular DSPs or synths. Other than that, there's also Csounds with its multitude of manuals and tutorials.

    Crysis 3 Trailer - Sound Design Demo

    Now that's some top tier sound design! I don't agree with the opinion that this should have some form of crescendo. That's mostly the soundtrack's role. The trailer composition is as it is - there's no real climax moment there, so I didn't expect any building up. However, I do agree with nsmadsen in terms of lingering reverb tails. Also, a big bottom low frequency droning could greatly enhance the overall impression. Well ok, maybe not droning exactly. What I mean, is that, apart from making longer reverb tails, a boost in sub low freqs would make it even more appealing (but don't boost anything below 30hz). Then again, like with almost everything... apply that with moderation. Kristoff K.

    Acoustic Electronic (Work in Progress)

    I really dig the guitar work! However, in the first half the drums and guitar not always hit in the same moment.   The drums are a bit weak in terms of presence. By all mean, don't change them, as those are very good acoustic percussion bits! Just process them more.

    0:35 brings a high pitched arp. It's not bad, but strains the ear after some time. We wouldn't want to annoy anyone facing the boss for a longer time now, would we?

    Constructive Criticism On My Track

    I agree with dakota.potts. Sounds quite decent, but standard.   Technically-wise, I'd improve those drums. For instance, those timpani - they need more presence. Also those high freq drums(?) could benefit from a moderate boost in the middle registers.   I don't know what libraries you were using for the orchestration, but the lead instruments sound a bit too artificial. I advice you to experiment with keyswitching the articulations.   I see no problems in terms of composition or mixdown, Apart from those things I just mentioned, everything sounds tight, crunchy and generally enjoyable.   Keep up the good work!
  11. Hmm, honestly I'm not sure, if that intentional goofiness will serve you well. I understand that you're aiming at smaller companies, however chances are, that a fraction of those companies could find this a bit unprofessional, if not unsavory  Personally, I'd stick with a more minimal and serious approach. Don't get me wrong, it's good to have a laid-back appearance, but in this case I'd just play it safe (it's always better to, say, have 10 companies having a good impression, than 8, if the remaining 2 would deem the reel too corny).   Another very important thing and, by all means, I don't want to insult you, is that voice-over makes you look quite arrogant. Quoting Sniper from TF2: "Professionals have standards. Be polite. Be efficient." Go with the modest, but sharp and effective approach. Don't sound like a used car salesman. People will see it through.   Also, play it minimal, but neat. I don't know about others, but I find flashy, out of the blue pictures, with bold and sporadic colour fonts on a white background kinda annoying.   Oh, and if I were you, I wouldn't say I'm cheap. Instead, maybe say, that you offer quality product for a reasonable, negotiable price!   Good luck!   Cheers, Krzysztof

    Need Orchestration Feedback

    Sounds good!   But I'd give the contrabass more flavour and I don't mean just boosting the low frequencies. Check out some awesome bass processing plugins i.e. by Waves. LoAir would give that cinematic massive bottom freq feel!   Also, if you're not using it already, then I advice utilizing round robin string patches. Gives a more 'human' feeling. Timpani sound good, but could be bit more crunchy and aggressive (unless you want them to be more hidden).   Composition-wise, it sounds very nice and appealing. However, and that's something I say quite often, it could always be better. Don't get me wrong - you've already passed the professional threshold, so no need to worry. What I'm trying to say is that, despite having good results, always try to improve your skills! ;)
  13. Yes, taking the pitched speech samples is the way to go. However... I would go a bit further and, besides speeding up the sample, I'd also tweak the formants. Personally, I think that manipulating the formant could help you adjust the voice, so it would match the character appearance. You know, like a fat character, or tall and thing, or small and cute. By tweaking the formant, you wouldn't have to rely on additional pitching, which could be more time- and resource-consuming.

    Constructive Criticism of Soundtrack in Progress

    Hey! First of all, I really like the string section. However the piano part sounds a bit muddy. A bit more spacial processing would also serve it well.   The percussion arrangement sounds good, but I'd go few steps forward in terms of processing the samples. The kick drums is very decent, so it can stay as it is, but the other percussion bits could be underlined more. Add some crunchiness, saturate it a bit - let the percussion be bit more bald (but not standing out too much). Watch out for the high frequencies when doing it... Also, some sporadic fx automation could enhance the overall appeal.   The bassline is quite good, but I know you could do it better. Now I don't want you to overdo it, but try meddling with some bass processing plugins. If that proves to lead nowhere, then leave it as it is.   When it comes to the mixdown, refer to my reply in the loudness thread. Just watch out not to kill the dynamics!   Keep up the good work!
