    UK Universities

HI guys,   I did a course in Games Technology at Kingston University. Got myself a 2:1 and a job as a Data Analyst for the past year. One thing I noticed was that while I did learn the basics of Programming, I never went into any focus on any languages. It was only when I went to my first interviews I realised how poorly prepared I was. I've done my current job for a year and if anything it's made me want to go back the games industry more than when I started.   Recently the idea has been going around my head, that with the money I have saved, maybe I should go back to uni and do another course, this time focused on programming.    What do you guys think? Is this a horrible I idea or am I moving in the right direction? All I know is that for the first time in a while I actually feel good about the future.    If you guys think this is right could you help me find some universities in the UK?

    Supernatural Game

Hi guys, I was thinking of making a game based in the Supernatural TV Series universe and I want your advice.   1. What are the issues with the Supernatural Narrative that makes game development difficult for it? I feel the story suffers from overpowering their characters. In the first series demons were dangerous (Still manageable, but dangerous.), now they kill so many it feels like they are cannon fodder.   2. With the above in mind what setting should the game be based? Should I include the characters from the TV series or shall I focus on my own character? Do I focus on some story arc involving demons or more on the general monster hunting?   3. What perspective? I feel a first person perspective works for the horror genre of the TV series. (Hasn’t been scary since the third series.)   4. Anything else I should be aware of before going into this? I feel the Supernatural universe is a really rich one, with a lot of room for expansion, but also room for me to screw up.

You have drawn the wrong conclusion from your experiences. Read http://sloperama.com/advice/lesson5.htm and http://sloperama.com/advice/lesson24.htm - then revise the conclusions you should draw from your previous experiences. Again: look beyond how hard you tried to apply for QA jobs before, stop thinking that the problem is the UK job market, and see the real flaws in what you did.     Just finished reading them. That's some interesting stuff. I'll look try things differently next time.      So "small" in fact that they're starting to open offices in eastern Canada because they lack the necessary workforce locally?     I'm just calling it as I see it. I'm happy to be proved wrong. :)

    Need some advice

Thanks. I've seen this website before. It's a good refresher.      Unity is something I have used in the past. When I get the chance I'll make a real push to do something with it. Maybe pong?     Sorry for posting this in the wrong place. I consider myself to be my own worst critic. That project was bad. The game was terrible and if it taught me anything it taught me how not to program. I've tried applying for QA, but in the UK there just seems to be a smaller games industry. I'll keep trying and I'll keep coding.      Sorry. I didn't mean to whine. This post was kinda cathartic for me. I have no one to speak to about this, so I turned to the internet (Forever Alone :p). In honesty I feel a lot better since i wrote this. I have to say it's partly what you guys have told me and what you cover in this post. I want to move on and sitting around doing nothing isn't going to help me do that. Right now I'm working on app that I aim to have finished soon. After that I'm going to  move on and do something I want. I need to get back to designing games and I intend to do so with relish. Thankyou all the by the way. I appreciate everything that you've told me.

    Need some advice

I suppose I deserve that. The course was Games Technology and is meant to be a sub-choice of Computer Science from what I know. Any advice on where I go from here? (I can not go back to university, I simply can't afford to.)

    Need some advice

I'm not sure where to start but I can summerise this post as a crisis of faith if anything. I just need some advice, because I have no idea what to do.    I am a recent graduate from a UK University with a Games related Degree. I have applied for jobs for the last three months with little or no response. I am a part time employee of a Games Lab, but in the whole of last year, due to hours, I earned £34.89. I have been to two interviews. One for a QA Compliance tester, that I didn't get because I had no experience in Compliance(???). The other is part of the reason I'm writing this post today. I applied for a Mac Junior Games Developer position about a week ago. Not knowing what to expect other than that there will be some technical questions I went to the interview and encountered a problem I couldn't solve.   This is not the same, but It's close to the problem I had to solve (Imagine the c++ version). http://www.ardendertat.com/2011/10/31/programming-interview-questions-12-reverse-words-in-a-string/   The problem is that I had no idea. I have over two years of experience in C++, but I've never worked with something like this, beyond setting up for loops. That all my lecturer said I would need to know to get through. It was devastating. Three years of  study and I couldn't even answer a question like this, something I knew was basic, but had no knowledge on how to solve it. The guy was nice, but he and I knew that I wasn't going to get the job.  On the bright side I got engaged last weekend to my long term gf. (:D) So every silver lining. Then today happened. I went online to see if any news on my grades had come. During the last year of my course  I had to create a project worth twice as much as anything else I had that year. I spent months working late into the night on the game and report. (Oddly the report was worth twice as much as the game.). I didn't come home for three days due to the work. Today I found out I got a D- on the project.    I'm... I don't know how to describe it. It feels like the last three years of my life have been worthless. Programming is something I've always wanted to do, making games has been my dream since I was a kid, yet I don't even think I can do that. I want to know how to move on. I want to know how to change and get better.   I don't know how to end this post. I need some advice any advice. This is life, I know that. I just wish I knew what to do.
