  1. Hi,      I am wondering if I had developed a game maker how would I go about selling it to a company that would want to either buy/use it or market it to other people who would use it?      ~Cdos

    Arrays & SQL

Yeah I thought about doing that, but I figured there could be an easier way to do it; like, I had a feeling.
  3. Hi all,          So, I've been working on a project that renders maps from an sql database using php. Everything works fine but when I try to run the project by itself (not going into Flash and pressing CTRL+ENTER, just loading the .swf file) the file doesn't communicate with the PHP files. Has anyone had this problem before? Am I doing something wrong?    Btw, I tried uploading it to a site (like newgrounds) to see if that was the problem and it still doesn't work.   Please help if you think you can.    Thanks.    ~ Cdos ~

    Arrays & SQL

I did this and it worked! Thanks! Apparently, the only problem I was having was actually storing the serialized string because the SQL DB kept truncating it. I didn't know you could increase the size of char and varchar, I thought it's max size was 255. Anyway, this fixed the problem and now everything is going smooth, thanks Diego!

Whats the point in hobby game programming?

I don't know about turning it into a career since, as many people in this thread seem to say, it all depends. However, I've been doing it for a hobby for years now and it does add a decent amount of pocket change to your bank account. I think you can make a career out of it as long as it is like indie stuff and eventually turn it into a AAA type career.

    Arrays & SQL

Hi guys,      I would thoroughly appreciate help on this matter as I have been stuck for the past few weeks. So, I'm making a tile based game using flash and I've managed to pass the map, in the form of a multi-dimensional array, successfully to PHP. The problem is passing it to SQL and getting it back to flash in the original array format. This has been highly frustrating. The closest I have gotten is getting the array back as a string, but I don't know how serialization works, I haven't had time to learn it and I tried using the JSON as3corelib, but it had too many bugs and it was also frustrating to deal with.    I am asking if anyone knows how to store multi-dimensional arrays (or arrays in general so I can start somewhere) in an SQL database. Right now I am using phpmyadmin for the interface of SQL. If an MD array can be stored, how can be retrieved?    Thanks.    ~ Cdosrun 01 ~
  7. Wow, thanks for all the responses guys.     I think I'll just stick with Front End since that's my weakest point and learn something like Ruby/Django concerning backend about every other day/week. I already know a bit of PHP so I'm going to try to broaden my horizons with ruby or the python language.
  8. Thanks.    I have just one more question, since you are strong in python and have done web development, do you see Django taking over PHP in the future? I worked for a web team at one point and the tech. lead kept telling us that PHP is being fazed out for other languages like Django or Ruby on Rails. I'm just asking to know if PHP is really something I should learn.
  9. Hi ,      I'm a college student studying computer science and I am really lost as to what kind of programming I want to do. I wanted to try making money from home with programming, but it wasn't until now that I realized that I have no idea how to do it. Some friends have told me that web design/programming is a really good way to get started on this front, but I don't know how to do that. I've been doing code academy and I know some stuff from years ago (like HTML, javascript and CSS).    My questions are:    - Can I really be a web programmer that works from home and make a decent amount of money or am I just kidding myself?     - If the first is true, what languages should I learn to get started?    - What jobs about web design should I look for?      I know this may see a bit too much, but it seems as though there are a lot of people with experience here that I think can help me.   ~ C Dos ~

    Alien Invasion

Interesting topic. I'd say it really depends on the alien. If they aren't outright violent, then I'm pretty sure we'd do something stupid like, you know, shoot them. Also, I'm surprised no one mentioned the diseases that the aliens could bring to us. What if they carry some weird nasty diseases that wipe us out or make us zombies or something.   If they were to invade robots fighting them are soooo highly unlikely. Like if they came tomorrow we don't have the resources to fight them with robots (well we have 100 drones or something I think -- speaking strictly of the us military --  so we'd just send those which would run out pretty quickly).   But apparently there is a department for this (aliens invading I mean). called SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestial Intelligence) group did make a deceleration: http://www.seti.org/post-detection.html   Vsauce talks about this, it's pretty interesting if you guys want to check it out < vsauce video on youtube >

    Alpha testers wanted

Hi,      I just created a flash game and I want to see if everything is working smoothly as well as general feedback on gameplay. Now the campaign is nowhere near finished, but all of the mechanics and what nots are done. I finished the tutorial for the game and I want you guys to test it to see how far anyone can go before a bug pops and also feedback on how good it is. If it is pretty fun I will add a sandbox mode where one doesn't have to follow the campaign.       This is a simulation type game. It isn't heavy on the details, but there are some things you can do in it. Basically you are a blacksmith that runs a shop.    Link Here: http://www.newgrounds.com/projects/games/785009/preview   Any feedback is very helpful ^_^ *constructive criticisms please*    Thanks  ~ CDos ~
  12. Hello all,      I am working on a game whose story is important in only that it serves as a background for the game. It took me a few days to hammer out the details, and I want to know if it is pretty good.    The title of the project is thunderhead and it places the player on a planet that needs to be colonized so humans can live there. Unfortunately a hostile alien race lives there as well, but they aren't good people. The full story is below.   Ty in advance.
