  3. Hey folks, So a few months ago I've booked a session with the 99Ochestra, which offers live orchestral recording sessions (30-piece Orchestra)  for very cheap (99$ for 7min of recording). The Session happened at the end of January and I just wanted to share my final result with you guys, hoping you will find it informative.   5. Yes a well written guitar part will be enough to provide both harmony and rhythm! 
  6. Awesome piece!    But you need to put a guitar part in there, it will help with driving the rhythm. Also those synth pads are unnecessary. Mix-wise put a little less reverb and it will sound great!   Good Job!

Hi everyone,   Lately I've been watching a couple of masterclasses by composer Mike Verta - he keeps saying that writing music fast is a skill that is very important to have, because it saves you from getting bored with your ideas and ending up by overwriting or throwing your pieces away - It also keeps you in the creative inertia that you have when you write an initial idea, and it saves time when you're on short deadlines. Finally it forces you to develop your other musical skills, because you can only rely on them when you have to go fast.   Anyway, I've decided to develop this skill by doing speed writing exercises. I'll start by writing very short pieces (30s or so) and then probably switch to longer ones as I get more experienced with this.    This the first piece I wrote, I've written it mainly for strings - it just has a touch of brass and harp on the last chord :   https://soundcloud.com/claude-ruelle/speed-writing-250516   The writing process took me like 2 min, but then I had to spend some time orchestrating, rearranging the parts and performing it in my DAW.  So it was a total of ~15min for 30s of music - I think it would have taken me more time with a bigger orchestration.   I'll continue those exercises until I get better and faster in my writing :)   I would like to know what you guys think about this approach.   Happy composing,   Claude.
  10. YoungProdigy, I listened to your music and I think you can make it sound better with the same samples!   You need to focus more on the realism of the orchestration. In a lot of your tracks your orchestra sounds unbalanced, and a lot of the things you write will not even sound good with a real orchestra. That's why you often get "the samples sound unrealistic".   The first thing you need to do is to balance your template, and the way you do it is by performing a real score (a score that you actually own, where you can read all the dynamics and articulations) in your DAW and then by balancing all the tracks in order to make the ensemble sound like the real recording of that score. That way writing unbalanced things in your template will be almost impossible and this will teach you how to orchestrate.   Try to perform all the parts yourself, do not quantize anything, and if you can, don't even use a click track. This will help with the realism.   Another tip I can give you is to transcribe transcribe and transcribe! Listen, try to reproduce what your favorite composers do and then get yourself the score, look at it and compare it with your work. You will learn tons of things!   After that just create a little bit more space in your template with reverb, and use EQ and compression when you need to.   Here's a mock up of the Galaxy Quest Theme (Written by David Newman) I did a while ago using only samples from Kontakt 5 and a free sample library called the Total Composure Orchestra. You will hear that even bad samples can sound okay when you apply those techniques :   https://soundcloud.com/claude-ruelle/galaxy-quest-mockup   Today I use better sample for sure, but it's only 20% of what will make your music sound better. The other 80% reside on what I told you above.   Hope you are getting my point.
