    Engine for 2D turn based games

    Since your original idea was to create everything by yourself in C++ with SDL, I'd suggest you look into MonoGame as a higher-level counterpart to C++/SDL. It uses C# instead of C++ but it's a framework where you are mostly free to do anything you like instead of an engine where you have to adapt to the choices of the engine's developers.
