    At last It Ends...

Hi all, this is just a rant (and a bit of a sigh of relief). My seven + years of tenure at my current employer is coming to an end at 5pm CST. The company is relocating 1.5 hours away (1 way) and I am not going to be making the daily drive (neither is 90% of their workforce in general and all of their ability to support product in the field and to make new product). Seven years of your life down the crapper is a hard pill to swallow. At my age, I don't have another start up in me, and the shelf life of rank and file programmers is limited (you start to price yourself out of the game after a few years, especially with children). Anyway, this Mongolian Cluster F$#k is coming to a close. I am married with children so this is bitter sweet as you might imagine. I can't live on unemployment for long. I've worked for way under market value, worthless stock and unfulfilled promises for the entire time, so I don't have much saved. I have a couple of prospects, one a face to face with a defense contractor in the midwest on Tuesday which looks very promising and would be a step up into management and out of rank and file. I know everyone has their own problems, but I just had to let it out anyway. Thanks for listening (reading) J

No, you don't have to accept a raise. But I don't want a pay cut either. Try paying child care on a couple of young children while starting back at a lower (beginning salary) rate on top of a car payment, house payment, etc. Child care is my single biggest expense as I imagine it is with anyone who has more than one child in care while at work ( I have 3 in care. 4 total). Most won't hire someone of 35+ years for what they are worth (in years of experience) when they can get a single person who can work 80+ hours a week for less money, has no outside responsibilities (like staying home with a sick kid, child's sporting events, etc.) the solution is simple: move to india. You might have something there =).

Thanks for the kind words, Evelyn, I'm trying awfully hard to look at this in the best light possible though I think I would need night vision goggles to discern any light at all. All I can see is tunnel so far. Things will work out, they always do. I just hate starting over after so many years. J

    dialog box problem

strip out the keyboard interaction and Dialog Box creation from the main drawing function. (The following code) In other words make a separate function that checks for keyboard input and switches on the key pressed AFTER your main loop (drawing function). if(open_key pressed){ //dialog box function OPENFILENAME ofn; char szFileName[MAX_PATH] = ""; ZeroMemory(&ofn, sizeof(ofn)); ofn.lStructSize = sizeof(ofn); ofn.hwndOwner = hwnd; ofn.lpstrFilter = "Text Files (*.txt)\0*.txt\0All Files (*.*)\0*.*\0"; ofn.lpstrFile = szFileName; ofn.nMaxFile = MAX_PATH; ofn.Flags = OFN_EXPLORER | OFN_FILEMUSTEXIST | OFN_HIDEREADONLY; ofn.lpstrDefExt = "txt"; if(GetOpenFileName(&ofn)) { //process the file } //end dialog box function } Either that or flip the surface and sync frame rate before you process the dialog request.

    Dont see the fantastic four.

I didn't think that the FF was too bad. I took my kids to see it, and they really enjoyed it. It was a bit juvenile(sp?), but entertaining. I walked into it not expecting an academy award winner. I am a comic book fan from back in the mid 70s and my biggest gripe with all comic book movies is that they stray so far from the comic book stories the characters are generated from. Also paricular to the FF movie, I would have rather seen an entirely CG Thing rather than a guy in a suit.

  16. Hello ,All. This is really a question aimed at those of you who are professionals working in the field of game development, sim development, or those of you who are going to graduate in the near future. Also of specific interest to me are those of you who are married and have a family. I am on the verge of a unique opportunity in the short term and will potentially need to attract some talent to the midwest (programming and art). As a quick look at any job posting(s) related to any of the above fields will show you, the VAST majority of jobs are located on the coasts (East, West, and South). In these areas the cost of living is SKY high so you take home less of what you make than you might say in the midwest. A comparable developer salary of say $70-$100K in the midwest would practically buy you a mansion in comparison to what you could afford on the coasts as well as put more of what you earn generally back in your pocket. Are the majority of developers from coastal regions originally so there is not a cost of living shock associated with them working in these areas? I know that the majority of developers in the game industry are single, so $80K sounds like a boat load of money, but how do those of you with families fare? Would the midwest be more attractive to those of you with families? Is there a general bias in those of you who are younger against the midwest? In other words, what would it take to attract top notch talent to the midwest? Thanks in advance for all comments. J

    Location, Location, Location?

Thanks for the replies. Out of curiosity, do either of you have families? If so, what do you pay in child care per month, also does your wife work?
  18. The first Alien movie. When the captain is searching the maintainance tunnels with only a flashlight for the creature. The crew (monitoring him with motion sensor equiptment) warns him that the creature is right on top of him. He turns right after seeing nothing to his left, and it gets him.

    Location, Location, Location?

You are right about Austin,TX it is really exploding. Though it is not so cheap in reality, anything or anywhere is when compared to California or many portions of Washington state. For the purposes of this disucussion I would put Texas, California, Washinton, Florida, etc. all in the "coastal" designation. By midwest here, I am meaning REALLY midwest, Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, etc.

I hate it when people go to school or work sick

Like a lot of the above posters have mentioned. Sick and vacation days are often lumped together and (time)accumulated for both at the same rate or fixed at a static rate for each calander year. I would rather go into work sick and save my "sick" days for something enjoyable. Also as a lot of posters above have mentioned, it is often frowned upon to be absent from work sick or not. If you are not there being "productive", they will find someone else who will be.

Can war on terror be won

The "terrorists" as we know them are people who are in such abject poverty and hopelessness in their day to day lives that any sort of release, especially one promised by those they admire, that offer eternal salvation and 100 virgins sounds great. In addition that makes them SOMEONE, and they wont have to toil and die in anonymity (something NOONE from anywhere wants to do). A large portion of the middle east today lives like the rest of the civilized world did 400 years ago(or more). When they see someone better off they find it easy to resent them, don't we all? To win the war on terror, as was stated before, you have to kill the underlying causes. I'm not talking about the US alone here, I'm talking about everyone. Debt relief, and investment in those areas that offer fulfilling and financially rewarding work to all that are willing, etc. This is an unachievable goal. What developed country doesn't have masses of less fortunate and unemployed? I know we have a lot here in the US. Having said this, I see why these individuals fight (or at least the "why" that sqares it all in my mind), and to a degree I can empathize with these people as I would any honest person who just wants a better life for themselves and their families. However the US doesnt owe these people anything that their own governments aren't willing to do for them. We can and will win the war on terror, but not by coddling these people. It will have to get very messy (and will I'm affraid) in the end.

    Scripting

I would also go with Python or Lua. I found that a great book is Game Scripting Mastery . It walks you through integration of both in some examples as well as shows you how to build a scripting system from scratch. A very good read in general. Good Luck J

    Best C++ program to use

I love the VisualC++ IDEs(not free). They are and have been pretty much the standard professionally, so it wouldn't hurt to learn how to use it. You can download the Beta2 versions of all portions of Visual Studio 2005 here J

    Output to Screen Coords

Something like so... void BeginText( void ) { //select the projection matrix glMatrixMode( GL_PROJECTION ); //store the projection matrix glPushMatrix( ); //reset the projection matrix glLoadIdentity( ); //set up an ortho screen glOrtho( 0, screen_width, 0, screen_height, -1, 1 ); //select the modelview matrix glMatrixMode( GL_MODELVIEW ); } //Insert your function to draw //your text between calls to these two //functions like so. //BeginText(); //your Text drawing function(s) //EndText(); void EndText( void ) { //select the projection matrix glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); //restore the old projection matrix glPopMatrix(); //select the modelview matrix again glMatrixMode(GL_MODELVIEW); } Hope it helped....
