    What would you do to make $5000 in 9 months?

    Thanks for all the replies and ideas. I didn't even think about the plasma. I donate blood already and that would be a few extra bucks on the side at least! My family and I live a pretty minimal lifestyle. We don't have any credit cards, our car is almost paid off. We don't eat out much, although we eat very healthy so the ramen idea isn't going to fly!

    Quote: Dice.com, rent-a-coder.com, careerbuilder.com, roberthalftechnology.com (rht.com) are a few. I'll take a look at rent-a-coder.com. Never really checked into that one. Thanks for the suggestions!

    This has nothing to do with what I think is *below* me. I've worked my whole life on farms, retail, restaurants, you name it. I have actually already applied for a dishwashing job (dishwashers where I live usually make a good hourly wage) and a retail job at the local Borders. I was looking at potential ideas from a development side of things as I could spend that time developing my software skills further. I think people read way too much in forum posts..

    Well, unfortunately I need to finish the one I am taking and take the one next semester. Otherwise my whole graduate career is going to flipped upside down. I was thinking of the contract route, but haven't had any luck finding anything last time (about a year ago) I was looking. I would have to be able to work from home or on the nights and weekends. Where would you suggest that I look for contract development jobs?
  5. So, I just graduated this past May, working full time as a Java EE developer making ok money. I am taking a graduate course this semester and plan on taking one next semester that I will be paying for out of pocket. I am also starting to pay back my student loans, factor in bills associated with my family (wife and 3 year old) and what you get is not much money left over. I've started saving a bit, but I'm sure you all know how it is. So, I am asking other developers, what would you do (legally) in the next 9 months to make $5000?
  6. You might want to take a look at how Ogre3D does it, particularly at OgrePlatform.h. It isn't too complicated and Ogre3D supports Windows, Linux and OSX.

    DigiPen/Fullsail for Graduate work

    That sounds very much like the master's program where I am now. It is a small school so there is a lot of cross over between the classes and most undergraduates find themselves taking a lot of graduate classes to complete their program even though it is not required. Thanks!
  8. I graduated last year with a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Minor in Mathematics from a traditional University. The job market where I live (Maine) is not what I would call a hotbed for programming related jobs. We have quite a few companies but they are more enterprise oriented and not at all what I want to do. I have started on my Master's at the same school I was at and have the potential and opportunity to work on some interesting artificial intelligence research, but like all things there are drawbacks. I'm not too fond of my school for one, but regardless of what I am doing I always come back to game related development and projects. I have looked at FullSail as my wife is from that area but haven't really decided anything. I would like to hear from people who have gone through graduate programs at either school. Opinions? Concerns? Please nothing about not going to a game school etc.. I know the differences and would prefer to hear from people who have been through it.
  9. I very much agree with Fenrisulvur and would ask the question, "How do you become a better writer?" Well you have to write. I have written many tutorials that have never been seen by anyone other than myself. I wrote them to help me better understand the material myself. When I was tutoring Calculus at my University, I often would spend time, when I wasn't tutoring, writing explanations of many of the common issues that students would ask me as a way of working through the problem to better help my explanation. You don't truly understand something until you can teach it to someone else. If you want to make your blog more popular, you also need to be able to write well and that takes practice. If writing tutorials for what you are working on is going to help you understand it better and make you a better writer than go for it. The worst censorship is that which you inflict upon yourself.

    Remove title bar with SDL/C++/Win

    LOL, yeah that works too!

    Remove title bar with SDL/C++/Win

    Oh, just in case you didn't know, MFC is really just a bunch of classes that encapsulate the Windows API. Anything that you can do with MFC you can do with the Windows API (you just might be at it for a bit longer :)

    Remove title bar with SDL/C++/Win

    To do this, you will have to delve into Win32 code. This will break cross platform functionality. You will need information from http://www.libsdl.org/cgi/docwiki.cgi/SDL_SysWMInfo to get the HWND. SDL only allows one window at a time, so you will probably have to create a primary surface with a call to SDL_SetVideoMode, free it after your splash screen and than create a new one. I also don't see why you couldn't create a single primary window and using the Windows api, and modify it during run time. So you would only have a single SDL_SetVideoMode call but you reuse the same window. I've never tried this, but have added a menu bar and done some other misc. things to the window. I'd be interested in trying this out myself.

    Java - class declared operators

    Java doesn't support operator overloading. You just have to write methods that will do the operations.. for instance: Vector vec1 = new Vector (1.0f, 2.0f, 3.0f); Vector vec2 = new Vector (5.0f, 5.0f, 5.0f); Vector vec3 = vec1.dotProduct (vec2); or similar..

    Book on SDL

    If you are just looking for a reference, just use the online documentation. Focus on SDL is a good book and is more of a reference than a book on making games. If all you are looking for is a reference stick with the online docs.
  15. Check out Code::Blocks. It is open source and runs on a lot of platforms. Nice thing is it is really easy to point it to use different compilers. For instance I have a project setup on a PC running windows using the VC 9 compiler, on linux it uses gcc. It also has a lot of settings, like eclipse for auto-formatting etc..
