    OpenGl and DirectX both?

Quote:Original post by kaktusas2598 It is possible to learn both OpenGL and DirectX? And it is waste of time? No, it's definitely not impossible. As for a waste of time, like jyk said, that's up to you and what you want to get out of learning them. If you're interested in making games for fun (as in, not for your career), then it's really up to you what you want to use in your games. OpenGL only does graphics, and DirectX can do graphics, input, sound, etc. You can even use OpenGL for graphics and DirectX for everything else in a game if you so desire. Also, I hear OpenGL is easier to learn (having never learned OpenGL I can't attest to whether or not it really is easier to learn, but that seems to be the prevailing opinion). If you're interested in making games for a living and working in the industry, then learning both would work to your advantage. While many companies will use DirectX, some do use OpenGL. Plus putting both down on your resume won't be a bad thing. Good luck to you!

    Favorite novel

Quote:Original post by cloudscapes Ender's game (the four first books) were really great! Started the Ender's Shadow books but it got too militaristic/religious for my personal tastes. I'll second that. I liked the original Ender's Game quartet as well, and Ender's Shadow (the novel), but the rest of the Ender's Shadow books aren't my cup of tea.

    How big are you?

Quite skinny. 6'4" and 180 lbs. Funny enough, I was a huge baby, being born at 10 lbs 8 ounces.

    Laptop for college

I'll second the Dell and ThinkPad options. I've had my Dell laptop for three years now (I'm actually on it right now) and I've only ever had one problem with it that was actually my fault. As far as ThinkPads go, I've never had one, but one of my computer science professors has one and he loves it.

    FireLight... again

With more time now that school is over, I'll be continuing work on FireLight. The storyline is coming along, and I've got one of my friends making sprites for it. The programming part is still in it's infancy, but I plan to have that fixed in a few weeks or so. I've also acquired the domain names abortsoft.com and abortbuttonsoftware.com for use of my company, whose staff is made up of me. I've got a temporary website up, and you can see it at www.abortsoft.com (abortbuttonsoftware.com just redirects you to abortsoft.com). Hopefully I'll be able to do some work on the website soon as well.

    Which subject should I prefer?

There really isn't one "most-important" part to game programming, each part is just as important as the others. Plus, if you want to make your own game in 4 hours (and it would have to be a very simple game to complete in 4 hours, btw), you'll have to know all the basic areas, not just one. I would suggest taking a look at the "For Beginners" tab under resources. It would help you out a lot.

Game Name same as Movie Name

Thanks everyone. I'm going to change the name, just to be safe.

Game Name same as Movie Name

Quote:Original post by tsloper What does your lawyer tell you? I don't have a lawyer, and as I'm a college student, I can't afford one. If I were to change it to "FireLight: The [enter something here]", like "FireLight: The Savior" (that's just an example). Would I be in any possible trouble still?
  9. So I've been working on my next game, and I want to name it FireLight. The problem is, there is already a movie by that name: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119125/ The game has absolutely nothing to do with the movie in any way, the titles are the same by pure coincidence. My game probably won't receive much attention as it is, but I'd like to let people download it when I finish. Granted that is a while off until I do so, and the movie was a decade ago, but is there a possibility that I might get in some legal trouble? I'd like to stick with the name, as the story line is something I've been working on for a while. Thanks in advance.

    If you're a Geek, you're a Virgin.

Wow, and I thought my job was bad. I'm a fast-food manager (got to buy those college textbooks somehow), and I've had customers ask what kind of drugs my employees were on, threaten to jump over the counter and attack an employee, tell another employee to punch me in the face, and curse me out over 2 chicken nuggets (but fortunately, never all at the same time). But never "You're such a virgin". Quote:Tell the guy you kind of know that you have a message for the guy he knows, and kick him in the balls. Have him carry the message on. Seconded. Quote: Quote: Original post by d000hg Could of said he was turning you on and you were touching yourself? weve got a winner! Seconded as well.

Looking for a good book on WinAPI programming.

I agree. Programming Windows by Petzold is the definitive book on Win32.

The Xbox 360 ate my homework...

Actually, I got my 360 in April. The manufacturing date is 4/13/06. I guess I'll be giving MS a call, and probably have to send it in. I'll be waiting until after the holidays though, so my package doesn't get lost in the holiday shipping extravaganza. BTW, I also managed a video of the disc shooting out at one point. Click here for the video. And please excuse the quality, I shot it on my video phone.
