Life happens

Week #3 No note worthy progress to speak of this week. Just been busy with other stuff. I am now working in more detail on the first level. Hopefully next week I'll have more to report.
2. Ok. The first week of this project is now gone. The minutes from last week's entry: Decided to make a game! Decided on a side scrolling action game. Decided to make one journal entry/week. That about covers it. So this past week I focused on brainstorming stories and how to fit the story to the games format. I'm not going to post the story (wouldn't want to spoil it for the 3 people reading my journal ) But I will say the basic plot summary goes something like this: A young impressionable girl's sweetheart is kidnapped by a group of thugs, and it's up to her to rescue him. Along the way she will learn things about why he was taken and where she can find him. Yeah I know, it sounds pretty lame but I'm trying to keep it simple. Besides it is just a set-up for what everyone likes in a game - A hot chick who kicks ass. Once I got a basic plot summary done I started to play with how to tell that story through the game. Here is a quick flow chart I made: * I used the trial copy of Smartdraw for this. Not a bad piece of software although I don't really know to make the best use of it yet. Also note that in my notebook each cutscene and level connect to specific events within the stories plot. But since I don't want to spoil it for you guys I just put label headers. Oh and the Cutscene doesn't mean like some crazy fully animated movie sequence. I was thinking more along the lines of an image and a block of text to explain the progression from one level to the next. The side quests are a chance to acquire new weapons or fighting techniques. This coming week the plan is to level by level flesh out the design till I'm happy with what I got. Yes it isn't all that interesting at this point but from my experience the more you work things over now the fewer problems you encounter later. That's it for this week.

Pistol - Part 2: Texturing

Very nice work! I usually skim over these time lapse modelling videos to the end but the harry potter remix music was such a good groove I watched it all through. The modelling video is better to watch than texture video way more interesting watching stuff get made.

Getting started.

Hi, I'm going to make a game for fun. Makes sense eh? Why else would you want to make a game for anyways? So this game is going to be a side scrolling action game. Why? Because that is small and simple enough for me to manage at this point; but has enough room to play with ideas to keep it fresh. It also keeps publishing methods rather open at this point. So when I'm done it can be a PC game, a mobile device game or a webpage game. So that's about all I got right now. This journal was a spur of the moment thing. I think in the future I'll try to post once a week to talk about ideas and development over the past week as a kind of recap of my progress, it will also give me time to make more well thought out posts also.

Dauntless Rogue: A small, open-source RPG

Hey nice start, would be nice to know what buttons do what in game, and when you kill the spiders you can"t walk over the corpse you have to walk around, this could be a problem in a narrow hall.

Welding problem in 3ds max

try converting your mesh to editable mesh, then welding the verts. When I have had problems welding that has always worked. Also about tolerance, it has to do with the distance apart your verts are. If you snap the verts on top of each other then a tolerance of .01 (default) is fine. This is good if you have something lined up exactly then you can select a whole batch of verts and it will only weld the matching verts to each other. But if you have a group of verts that are 1 unit distance apart you can set the tolerance to 1 and all selected verts within 1 unit distance will weld. hope that helps

Quote:Original post by Fukushuusha Hey friend! I had exactly the same problem when I first joined this forum. It was after I read the FAQ , that I understood how things are done here. You can go there and look cause there are more than just the image linking. This forum uses regural html. For example to post an image you type: <Lmg src="location of your image" alt="description of your image" /> Instead of Lmg you should put img , I just did it so that it does not try to link an image :p That's how it was explained to me hope it helps.

ok here is another stab at the blind contour. I tried to do more of the interior lines as well in this one. oh and I found the last head drawings I did. Notice the date at the top. Yup it has been a while :P

Just some random inspiration

not really any drawing insperations but I have found good music to really help me relax and draw. Mostly classical piano and fingerstyle guitar. I really like Andy Mckee and beethoven's piano concertos. But any instrumental music helps. I try and avoid anything with singing as the words distract. But just some background music to help drown out the noises around you can help put you in the zone.

blind contour. thanks Oluseyi. I could post some head sketches I've done before but they are from a long time ago. I used to draw a lot but I haven't for a number of years now. I still do doodles and do thumbnails to help me brainstorm but this is really the first time I have really drawn anything in years.

here is the upside down drawing. I really didn't like this exercise I didn't see just shapes or stuff I just saw a head...that was upside down. I had the most difficulty doing the glasses and around the eyes. And now viewing it upside right I see the nose is crooked too.
