    Windows XP

Hi. I upgraded from windows 98 to windows xp. Howver i have 3 problems: 1. I don't know my activation key. What should i do? 2. My files were not lost during the installation, but they are not organized the way i want. For example, Windows XP tells me that there are no programs installed in my PC, although they are all there, in my C:\ folder. I want to place all this files to the folder that says "All Programs" and let the OS see that i actually have programs installed. Help? 3. I can't here a sound. For some reason it doesn't recognise my sound card. In windows 98 i would say "Add new Hardware" and it would search to find if there is new hardware in my machine. What should i do with my XP? I forget the name of the card too. Also, i don't find an option that says "uninstall windows xp" to go back to 98 ( unless i can solve the above problems with your help ), and i can't start in safe mode ( F8 while starting doesn't work ) to uninstall XP. PLEASE help me. thanks in advance

    Some things on XP

Thanks for the replies! Ok, that's normal :) I'll (try to) leave them there... And what about that ""msiexec /regserver"? ( i don't care about "msiexec", that's a program, i care about the "/regserver" part )

    Some things on XP

Hi again.. I have a question. I don't understand what the "All users" in "Documents and Settings" is for. ? And in "Documents and Settings\myname\Application data" there are some data about applications i installed. What's their purpose, i shouldn't delete anything right? Also, if you "run" with this command: "msiexec /regserver", what does that "/regserver" do? Thanks and sorry if my questions sound dumb :(

You say that because you take my family as different persons. But we are a whole, just like one individual. And that guy did give his money, what else do they need?

    Windows XP

Yes! This time i got it right! I reinstalled the OS and this time it installed the windows installer just fine! I don't know why it couldn't copy it the first time i installed the OS, but this time it was ok :). Thanks for all your help! Also, i found the drivers of my motherboard in my house, and now my audio card works just fine :) Right now i am downloading the drivers for my printer. Also, ok, my CD is burned, but it was a innocent burn, between the members of my family ( same blood ). We gave the money. Nothing nasty... Thanks for your help guys :)

But how much money should someone spend to get windows XP working? There should be a way to install it...

    Windows XP

It still can not be accessed. The setup didn't copy this program to my hard disk. What else can i do? If i reinstall the OS, i know it won't copy it again, and i will lose everything that i have already installed. Any other ideas?

right now in my services windows installer is started and automatic. when i try to install something, it opens and says "Preparing installer..." and stays there, and somethimes it says that windows is low in memmory and will get more virtual memory and might not accept requests for memory. What should i do now?

But the new key does not appear in the right pane of the Registry Editor window. It is created as a subfolder of MSIServer, and it's on the left side. Is that what you mean? thanks

hi in my computer i have windows 98, and it is very slow. everything. opening a program, a folder, ecerything. even the internet. But it wasn't like that before. Everything started before 2 months. I don't know how or why, it just happened. So what can i do to improve the speed of my computer? I know i have to use a program from start>programs>accessories>system tools, but i don't know which one. Can anyone help me make it faster please? thanks in advance

    Windows XP

rigth now i don't have time to speak about anything else, but the problem was that i didn't have windows installer ( msiexec.exe ) for some reason during setup. I got it. But when i run it ( oe when another program runs it ) it says that "The ordinal 280 could not be located in the dynamic link library msi.dll" I replaced the dll with a new one but the problem wasn't fixed. What do i do now?

Quote:Original post by benryves Quote:Original post by sdlprorammer many thanks for the replies guys :D ( i don't write my reactions and comments for all the replies, but i read them all and take them seriously into consideration, so thank you all! ) Quote:but I don't think so, IIRC programs are loaded on to your RAM when you start them up, aren't they? now it makes more sense :) But again, i don't get it. when i install a program, it is placed in my program files folder. But that folder is in the partition of windows! how am i going to have one partition for windows ( another one for linux ) and another one for applications and files? They are interchangable, how can i split them up? Why would you want to be able to see your Win32 apps from within Linux? I think there is a way to remap %PROGRAMFILES% to another folder than C:\Program Files, but I have no idea why you'd want to do this (it's risky!). The best bet is to change drive when actually installing the programs. I install everything to D:\Program Files, my windows is C:\Windows. I have a C:\Program Files folder which contains a few basics - OfficeXP, Media Player, Internet Explorer, but all the rest go on my D:\ drive. Ok now i see that there are 2 "Program files", one for each partition. :) Thank you! Quote:You want at least three partitions for this. A linux partition, a linux swap partition (small, maybe 250mb), and a ntfs (or fat) for windows 98/xp. Make the linux partition and the windows partition "bootable" (but not the swap). Why do linux need 2 partitions? Then i would have to make 4 partitions instead of 3 ( i thought i would have one for linux, one for windows, and one for programs and files )...? So if i am going to install both linux and windows i should install linux first and then windows right? edit: Anoter question. The regirsty of windows will be placed in the partition of the OS right?

    Windows XP

I downloaded the version for 98, and when i tried to run it it said that the OS was wrong. Also, i can't install Acrobat Reader because it seems that it needs the windows installer. So what am i gonna do now? >What manufacturer is your PC? What model? My PC? I don't know.. How can i find out? When i look at the box, i don't see anything about that.. :( Quote:Because you are using an illegal version (not 10% illegal neither 50% illegal but full 100.00% illegal) of Windows XP. You have a burned CD and no sticker with the S/N. Getting a serial number is easy enough. Most likely it is on your WinXP CD in some text file. But we are one family... I didn't do anything with any strangers.. thanks...

benryves sorry for not searching microsoft, these programs can be found there.. But your link is about 95/98N/NT, whereas i want it for XP. I searched microsoft for the XP version but i can't find it. What should i do now? ontheheap sorry if i am annoying :(. And why do you say that i go to sites for hackers and that i use illegal stuff? About the sound card, i'll probably open the box... IF i knew that the drivers were on my hard disk i would have backed up them...
