Is this story to schizofrenic? (sp?)

I think the idea is actually rather good. You could think of clever ways to use it in a game. Something that just came to my head although perhaps making the general idea more surreal is the following. As you said everyone has a soul or some type of phantom type that constantly follows them around and these souls carry the person’s personality/feelings etc as you said. The main character doesn’t have a soul, unknown to him. However not in the other world where the other souls know? This character due to not having a soul does not feel any type of emotion thus he constantly craves the need to be like people to fit into their lives to become them, he is a serial killer. When he kills his body absorbs these spirits and although in his world he is simply mimicking them its his black soul shall we call it that is making him do it so well, so perhaps some type of Adventure/Rpg game where dialogue changes along with how you interact with people on who you have killed and what in the other world you have absorbed…. I’m actually not sure on that now but I thought I might as well finish for finishing sake. Plus then I suppose it would perhaps be neglecting the transformation into the other world as you mentioned. Also when I started reading this I couldn’t help but thinking of Grim Fandango when the main character goes to the land of the living and all the imagery is very scary and still. Perhaps it might be a good idea to look at that part of Grim Fandango to perhaps formulate some ideas? Sorry the idea just came and it unfortunately sounded better in my head. Just a good idea and got me thinking. Good luck
  2. I think you should rewrite it all so it doesn't read so bullet pointy :P e.g. currently Sam goes to Brazil Sam doesn't want to go Sam wants to go clubbing. etc Although saying that, I suppose you just want to get the idea across, but you might want to try seeing how perhaps writing scripts is done and then applying that to get more descriptive aspects of your intro out, and deliver the content in a more colourful way to the readers. Personally I just stopped reading after the first paragraph due to the way it was written but I thought as you have what appears put a lot of thought into this, I should just tell you why I stopped reading it. I hope you don't take this to heart as you did ask for anything that could be improved. I would start where mentioned. Good luck

    Need Ideas for Game....

Quote:Original post by destron ok, i don't mean to be rude, but that's a pretty crappy idea, tesseract; there should be like potholes and oil slicks to avoid. I think he was being sarcastic Destron and just throwing in some humour :P
  4. lol durr silly me, thanks for the reply and silly me for not thinking about that :P Cheers
  5. Just a random question but just working on a simple pong game and when I load the applet within a html page, I firstly have to click on the applet to do anything on it. I know this isn't a major problem but just wondering if there is a way so when the page loads the applet is straight away under the player control? Unsure if this would be better placed within the html forum but hopefully it should be ok here. Thanks in advance. Nate

    [java] JLabel - new line

Quote:Original post by sindisil Quote:Original post by drackill Hello, I've been playing around with Swing for the first time and I'm just trying different things out at the moment. One problem I'm having is I want a JLabel to display a bunch of information but unfortunately I can't get it to go to a new line. I've been using Jlabel rather than anything else due to the fact it can’t be edited when running. What you want is JTextArea or JEditorPane. Call setEditable(false) to make the uneditable. The latter can be set up to allow display of simple HTML so you can easily do fomratting of the displayed text. Oh, you'll also probably want to enable word wrap if you use JTextArea. I often use a simple extesion to JTextArea to give me a multi-line label. Something like (depending upon the needs of the project): :D Cheers I think I'll defo go with the setEditable(false). Thanks for taking the time out to post all that :) Makes more sense now. Cheers

    [java] JLabel - new line

Quote:Original post by Son of Cain Changing its size to contain more than one line, and then using "\n" as an escape character, or html tags that break lines. Son Of Cain Thank you :D I shall give that a try now. Cheers
  8. Hello, This is just a general question; I’m currently in my first Year of Computer Science at University in England. I was hoping in my second year to attempt to see if I can do any free work experience while studying as to gain some experience within the games industry which as I know can be fairly difficult to get into after graduating. So I’m basically just wondering do developers/publishers normally allow computer science students to volunteer? Would be nice if anyone could share his or her experiences or perhaps their company’s position on this subject. Thank you in advance (Hopefully I posted this in the right forum)

    [java] JLabel - new line

Quote:Original post by Stiffler I don't know if there's a way around that since I don't really do java all that often, but you could just use a "JTextField" and set the editable boolean to false. Sorry if that isn't what you where looking for :) Cool thanks squire. As I'm new to Swing I didn't know JTextField had a way to disable it being editable. I'll give that ago. Would be interesting to know if there is a way to make a new line on a JLabel. Thanks matey

Sorry for the rather newbish question but I'm stumpt after having no luck on google or the Java documentation Thanks in advance.
  11. last week we did about Stacks in our java programming lecture. This is just a general question but what kind of real life problems could stacks solve? Bar perhaps undo features? Just a random question as my my friend asked me and it stumped me. Hehe Thank you for your time :)

    Degree of cursing and swearing?

Quote:Original post by TheOddMan Quote:Original post by drackill I think a war game needs some swearing. Your mate gets shot in the head your not going to scream at the enemy "You really nasty men, wait till I get you" I always love it when people give that example. <sarcasm>Of course he's going to swear! He'll see his dead mate, turn to the enemy and scream 'Oh my God! You killed Lenny! You bastards!'</sarcasm> More likely he stand there stunned, let out a huge scream, cry, try and save his life (okay so he's dead already, but seeing a mate get shot in the head'll do some funny things to a guy) or any of these other emotional non-swearing responses. It's unlikely he'd actually say anything coherent at all, with the shock of seeing his mate's brains spraying about. He *might* insult them later... 'Those bastards killed my best friend' ...but not right after it. Good point, although I’m sure I’ve seen films where the hero's mate gets shot which sends him into a suicidal rage screams "YOU FUCKERS!!" then repeatedly stabs the enemy with his baronet once he's some how managed to avoid all the bullets coming his way and run half a mile to the precise person who shot his friend. That in its self is unrealistic but hay its not real life :) but I know what you mean.

    Fanfiction for First Scripts

Like the previous poster, it's good practice but you could spend days, months writing these scripts sent in someone else universe; when it comes to using it in your own game or what not it simply might not fit. And perhaps won't be usable anyways due to copy protection issues.

    Anyone still using Pascal?

I don't use Pascal anymore, but I thought it was a brilliant language to learn how the basics of programming with. I think it might have been developed as a "teaching" language? I think it does that, as it provided me the ground to move onto different languages.

    Degree of cursing and swearing?

I think the idea for a clean dialogue is an option but does that have a bearing on the rating (if their is an option for no swearing) otherwise no point in putting a clean option in as it's still going to rate as Mature. I think a war game needs some swearing. Your mate gets shot in the head your not going to scream at the enemy "You really nasty men, wait till I get you" Although for humour value...that might work :P
