1. Thank you for the comments and support guys! And BaneTrapper, you're really awesome for posting this here. I appreciate it The graphics really are in a love or hate kind of style but I think it looks unique so I haven't looked back after deciding to stick with it. I didn't update the game thread for a while here and now it's become inactive. It tells me not to post anything and start a new thread since it's older than 60 days. Might do that at some point, when I have more to update or whatever. Cheers!
2. So, here are the download links. I fixed a couple of things today and wrote a new piece of music. Download for Windows Download for OS X I hope you guys like it
3. Just a little big update to say that this project is still going strong and even though these past few months have seen all sorts of ups and down, overall it's been really productive. Here's a new gameplay video to show the new developments: A new build for your downloading pleasure is probably coming later today, or perhaps tomorrow. Stay tuned! I also updated the first post with latest screenshots and stuff.
4. So, I've been working on the town where the game begins and where you can go back between expeditions. You can find men to hire from the tavern, buy stuff you need from the supply store, get quests and so on. I had done the tavern previously, but yesterday I drew the supply store you can see in the screenshot below. I also did the sidebar but the buttons need some work. And a quest button needs adding. From the map you will be able to choose an area of the world where you want to go. The world will consist of something like 10-15 'levels' which are different in size and terrain type, so the random map generator still applies. The further away areas are larger and take longer to get there for which you need more men, ships and supplies which means you have to adventure trough the smaller areas to get some wealth before. The travel time will be measured in seasons. When you sail out during spring, you will reach the nearest areas by summer. Or by next spring if it's far away. That forces you to think when and where to go. You can advance seasons by boozing around in the tavern but that will cost you. It's all starting to come together and when I squint my brain it's almost starting to look like a game. Really exciting! I'd also like to remind you all that the game can be found on the IndieDB site and if you're a user there, make sure you click 'Track this game' button because that way you are always up to date with screenshots, videos, music and new builds. I've gotten some pretty decent feedback there and the news of the release of the last build was featured on the main page for a while. Thanks!
5. Could someone on a Mac please check if the game runs. I've gotten reports that it doesn't. If it doesn't and it provides a crash log, in the "send to Apple" dialog, then please provide me with the log. I would appreciate it very much. Thank you
6. LennyLen, thank you. I know that not everybody is going to like the art style, but foremost it is the game I want to play, hence the game I want to make and I thought this sort of retro-vibe goes well with it. I'm not sure I could pull off a hi-res high-color smooth graphics like you see in all the Civilization and Colonization open-source projects and whatnot. I'm just a guy doing all the programming, art, sounds & music and I have to be realistic about what I'm able to produce unless I want it to take 3 years (which I don't). The graphics aren't in final state anyway. I want to add a lot of detail here and there to make the screen look a bit more busy. It has to look good. You mean controlling the unit movement with the keys and not the camera/viewport?
7. I can't seem to get past the keyboard controls screen. It just hangs there. This was an issue with the previous builds as well, but then it would suddenly/occasionally bring up the actual game. Not any more. I've tried refreshing the game about ten times, just in case something hadn't been loaded yet or whatever. The Unity loader doesn't stay visible for long either, only for a few seconds. Are you sure it's done loading this quickly? I'm using pretty much the latest version of Unity WebPlayer with Safari on Mac OS X 10.7.3 I really want to try it out ... Once I was done writing this post I gave it one last go, and it actually started playing the engine sound but the graphics were all messed up and the whole system became unresponsive (it crashed the OS but the sound kept playing). I had to reboot. Dare I try again? Edit: Okay, I waited a couple of minutes in the main menu before starting the race and now it seems to work. Edit 2: Crossing side of the track seems to glitch up the physics. At one point I got stuck with the nose of the kart pointing towards the sky. No way to reset, right?
8. Thanks, I know of that game and have watched some YouTube videos but haven't played it myself. Some parts of the game are certainly inspired by that game.
9. Every journey begins with a single step. Official Website So, what is this game about? Well it's a turn based exploration game with some RPG elements where you lead a party of pioneers each with different professions, skills and attributes. You start out in a town where you first have to assemble your party from the tavern, plan out and buy equipment you need from the supply store and get yourself a ship. Or two. Then by conversing with different people you get quests, which may be to follow the steps of the previous explorers that never came back and find out what happened, find treasures, compose an accurate map, find contact with unknown native tribes and 'export' religion or simply be the first to disover a piece of the world. You do all that while surviving the harsh environments with seasons that change each bringing with them a different set of challenges, fighting wildlife and tribespeople, finding food and water and trying not to die of dysentery. With each part of the world you discover, you gain access to larger regions further away from home. It's not that you couldn't go there to begin with but you need more men and supplies, which means you need to collect more wealth beforehand. What else can you do? One crucial, sort of, aspect of the game is communication. You see, when you encounter an unknown tribe you are not able to understand them because they speak an unknown language. All foreign communication in the game takes place in form of icons/symbols/glyphs that you have to decipher. To make the players life easier, animals and tribes both share the same system. When you see a wolf start to attack you and this certain icon appears over its head you better remember this, because when you interact with some tribes and the same icon appears, you know you better get out of there. The game is currently very much in progress but check below for playable builds. The game uses only 4 colors. Different seasons have different palettes with different set of colors. 10. Scrap my previous post, I misread the topic. What you actually need, is this:
int countArguments(const char * arg, ...) { va_list vl; va_start(vl, arg); printf("arg0 = %s\n", arg); int i = 1; while((arg = va_arg(vl, const char *)) != NULL) { printf("arg%d = %s\n", i, arg); i++; } va_end( vl ); return i; } printf("Argument count: %d\n", countArguments("Hello", "world", NULL); // Pass 0 or NULL as the last parameters, to detect the end of argument list
11. Variable argument list?
#include <stdarg.h> void vaFunc(int stringCount, ...) { va_list vl; va_start(vl, stringCount); for(int i = 0; i < stringCount; ++i) { printf("arg%d = %s\n", i, va_arg(vl, char *)); } va_end(vl); } vaFunc(2, "hello", "world");
This function expects all arguments to be char *, but if you want them to be to be of different type, you need to differate between them somehow. Take a look at this for an idea: http://msdn.microsof...9(v=vs.80).aspx
12. I really wanted to try this out but I can't seem to get past the main menu. I tried clicking "Go Race" several times but nothing happens. I also reloaded the page a couple of times. Also, in kart selection menu I only see the smoke (from the exhaust I presume) but not the kart itself. It looks like there is something flickering below the main menu graphics, but I'm not really sure. I only see a few pixels on the outer edges. Oh, hmm, okay. I pressed "Go Race" now and it works. Maybe it hadn't loaded all of the stuff yet? Also, could you make the camera changing buttons to something else than the Function keys. I'm on a Mac and these keys are used by the OS to do stuff, so the game doesn't get a chance. The kart itself doesn't seem quite right. Even when doing flat out and turning as hard as possible, the kart doesn't drift or slide or anything. It actually feels like a totally different vehicle, like a car almost. Karts are supposed to be very light and agile and tailhappy of sorts. This needs a lot of work I think. I think it should be something like when you accelerate and turn, the backside should start to drift out pretty easily. The kart model itself is very nice. As is the track texture, really beautiful Keep up the good work, I like it so far!
13. I haven't gotten any response here, which is sad actually because I'm really happy and proud of the end-result and thought others would enjoy it too, but I'll update this topic anyways. Because I just finished up ... Version 1.1 + Small fixes here and there + Got rid of the level password system and replaced it with more traditional level selection screen + Internal re-write to ease adding more level-packs in the future + 2 new levels, total of 32 now! + Native Win/Mac start-up window, where you can choose to play the game or check for updates and download them. + Installers for both Windows and Mac. It was interesting, I hadn't really messed with installer scripts and such before. Not much changes visually. You don't mess with perfection ;) Downloads and other information I hope you all enjoy it! If you have any questions, comments or other feedback, please let me know. Take care.
14. Hi guys and gals I wanted to let you know, that I just completed a game. It uses SFML for graphics and sound, and a little bit of libcurl. It took me bit longer than expected but that's sadly how it usually goes. But I'm very proud of this and really hope you enjoy it. What's it about? Well, it's kind of an old-school puzzle-game, where you control this little character on screen and he can push or pull colorful boxes. These boxes have to be moved onto a tile of the same color. Do so for all boxes and you complete the level. Sounds simple? Oh, no, not at all. As with games this kind, the further you get, the more difficult levels become. And you'd want to complete the level in as few moves as possible, for the sake of showing off your skill What does it look like? In a nutshell, like this (click on the thumbnail to see full-size): Where can I get it? You can freely get it for Windows and Mac here What else have you done or what are you working on? I have a small website, that contains all my past and future projects. You can take a look at it here That's it I think. Please try it out and let me know what you think Thanks and all the best, Eigen
15. SFML Sprites have a SetColor function. The default value is sf::Color(255, 255, 255, 255) but if you set it to 128,128,128,255 then it's drawn darker. For night though, you'd want something of blueish hue not pitch black.
