I have the oppurtunity to get a zaurus 5500 for 60$us, but the audio on it doesn''t work. I want to linux and have mandrake community 10.0 already installed. My question is does anybody think this is a good buy, and will i really miss the audio that much(don''t listen to mp3''s that much.)

Get it. I love mine. It sucks that audio wont work, but if the rest does that is an awesome deal.
I've had some good times with my 5500, and $60 is a steal! It is a great toy (and can be a very useful tool).

I've used mine on campus (with a wireless card) to check my email and chat on IM during boring classes. The best part is, it has a console (!) and you can get things like ssh and perl for it. And it's pretty good for emulating old video game systems (NES, etc).

Broken audio is a problem though. 90% of the time I just use mine as an mp3 player, or to watch episodes of South Park on the subway.

(Side note: It's been a LONG time since I've gotten a chance to look for new software for my Z, so I'm sure there's lots of even cooler stuff now than there used to be. http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus was the standard place to find apps last time I checked.)

I''ve had a zaurus sl5500 for quite a while. A very nice piece of hardware. With broken audio I wouldn''t say $60 is a steal, but if you want a toyish pda it''d be a good buy.

Battery life isn''t too great IMO when running an emulator or that type of stuff, and the audio quality isn''t even close to my portable mp3 player (granted, my portable mp3 player is very nice)

It''s still a great toy/tool. If you intend it as a bit of a toy then you should get it. If you are looking for just a rock solid PDA with great address/calendar/etc apps, you might want to find a PalmOS PDA instead.

What would be the best pda for playing with lisp/perl/python/c (any or all of those) while on the train or such? I noticed on that zaurus page software for many of these but then I''m in the dark about alternatives. Cheers.

Zaurus, or laptop. Those are about your only choices

I''ve a few laptops, and they''re definitely too big for a subway or train. Thanks for the input!

Trying to write C on a 3-inch-wide thumb keyboard doesn''t sound like much fun.

The Z is definitely the best (possibly only) PDA to do it on, though.
