It'd be pretty helpful if you made the "last post" field's time zone specific to the browser which the page is being viewed in (i.e. since I'm in the CST time zone I would prefer reading CST times instead of EST times. Converting to GMT is one thing....)

Just a thought, wouldn't mind a bit if things stayed the same.

This would be really good. However, a little step that may be easier to do quickly is simply to state the current time on the forum main page. Then it's possible to relate if something was posted minutes ago or hours ago.
