I am looking at the list of series 60 phones (http://www.symbian.com/phones/), and noticed that many of them say Java MIDP 1.0 or 2.0 without saying J2ME. So if a phone has MIDP, does that mean it has J2ME, or could it be MIDP for some other flavor of Java?

They are not the same. J2ME is an umbrella term, that includes MIDP/CLDC (what most phones are running), but also includes some other configurations and profiles for a wide variety of mobiles devices (from PDAs to JavaCards, to Kiosks, to pagers, to set-top boxes, etc.). But the term J2ME is usually used when referring to phones that support MIDP, since this is the most common use it has. So basically, MIDP is just a part of J2ME.

Here's how Sun put it.
