Cartoon Shader

I've been working on a cartoon shader, the fragment shader reads in two samplers, one for the actual diffuse and the other to supply the shading effect. So far I've been using glPolygonMode(GL_BACK,GL_LINE) to paint the silhouette but this isn't perfect as its showing problems with most of the models. So I'd prefer to find another way. Any ideas on how I can go about it?
