Mini contest : texture making.

A simple metal looking texture. I made it by using two layers of solid colors and erasing some random lines on the top one. Then I applied a motion blur filter to straighten out the lines. I applied an emboss filter with an interesting contour curve, and that was it pretty much. I used the blur tool (after offsetting), but because of the emboss filter, it made drops that looked like welding marks, instead of smoothing out the texture. I thought this looked pretty cool though, so I left it that way. Not too bad for 10 minutes.

decided to revive this thread since someone was asking for texture creation ideas.

Plus we could possibly update it with new examples and techniques ?

Thanks for reviving this thread. It''s soooooo useful. I''m working on getting some half-decent textures done and will post them in the hope of inspiring some other people to do the same.

Bye.

I am afraid those ideas would work better for level textures. Which is why we call them textures. And which is why model textures are usually referred to as "skins".

However if you like skins, I''d advise you to go and browse Polycount. They surely have good links to skinning tutorials.
Anyway, if you have ideas or questions, I am sure we can all try to find something to help you.
I there a particular texture you were thinking of ?

About the tiling, clouds and difference clouds tile, but the emboss is what messes it up.
Since I'm painfully bored... here are tiling green and blue opal stars on textured metal background. I had to leave the image size quite large to get the opaling to look decent, so it's a link instead of the image itself.

I made this texture by scanning a sparkly OldNavy star keychain, editing away the key ring part, using a neon glow filter to add a second color, using a watercolor filter to get the right sort of chunky texture, and adjusting colors to get a pleasant combination and intense contrast.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

Wow I really like that Opale look, that's pretty cool

Here is some stuff I did today during a fit of boredom...

Would you believe it's actually the same image, with just one layer changed ?
Can you guess what filters I used ?
