Speckled Tibetan Death Beetles, most likely.

He said he was in Australia.

They are Speckled Australian-of-Tibetan-descent Death Beetles.

I always figured they were baby mosquitos =/

no, baby mosquitos are aquatic, they live in dirty and stagnant water.

grosshoppers don't fly, and they don't look like flies.

Aren't they called marchflies? Definately procreating, I mean, who wouldn't?

you're thinking of mayflies, it's too late in the year for them (they're called mayflies for a reason), and they're too big for the description.

They might be flying ants. We get them in the UK. They are ants with wings and han g with their ant buddies.
