multi-texturing in Cg

It's my understanding that there are to ways to handle multi-texturing under Cg. One where you pass the texture ID in, and the other where you bind the shader variables to a texture unit. Is there a particular performance or flexibility gain with either approach? Or is it simply a matter of style? Any help would be most appreciated.
