MMOs are written in just about all languages, from C and C++ to ActionScript and PHP.

PHP? Really?

I'm pretty strong with PHP. The thought of trying to build an MMO with PHP on the server side frightens me.

Any examples? I'd love to see one!

It's not so hard to imagine, as long as you don't automatically associate MMO with World of Warcraft and the like. In a way management games are MMOs: multiplayer, quite a large user base and clearly online. Achieving high speed real-time game play might proof to be difficult with just scripting on the server, but other than that there are lots of possibilities to create an online game.

You could even consider this to be a MMO. [wink]
