Problem with attaching object to frame

Hello. I'm working with DirectX 9.0c and 3D Studio Max (Panda exporter). I have a character animated using Biped and Physique. I'm trying to attach another mesh (a sword) in-game to one of the bones (frames) of the character. If I attach it directly to the bone, it is not in the proper position - it's inside the wrist (Where the pivot point of the hand is). If I attach it to another object which is, in turn, attached to the hand bone it works perfectly - but the character stops animating (it's as though Panda only exports a maximum of one object per skeleton). If I make the proxy object unrenderable, the character animates properly but the sword is attached to the hand bone again. I hope this makes sense - the problem is really strange. Thanks for any help :)
