Making online game chars persistent

Maybe make it so that being online accumulates offline time up to some maximum, which are then consumed when you are offline. The more time you have the slower it accumulates, so gainimg time for overnight AI-mode takes like 15 mins, but for a 7 day vacation it would take like 10+ hours of gameplay. (max time could be 2 weeks, assuming you want the normal situation to be so that the character is on AI mode for the whole offline time)

@MitoTrue that they don't want in game resources, but don't NPC's take resources? Don't having NPC companions or hirelings? Yes, I totally agree that an ai for each npc, but has anyone tried it?

I like the idea of taxing, but if your char is an adventurer or low lvl crafter you wont have the funding.

@Imbarns For how to handle logged out players and people who would have multiple chars all farming cash. I would make the system so you would have to work with others to craft, no more one person economies. If you want to craft, you have to work with others, its an MMO, second M being multiplayer, not massive singleplayer. And as for what to do when players are logged off for long periods of time. I think that making characters have upkeep, like buying food and checking on their health would be required for a certain number of days. I would like to have each account have a house for their characters, so if they want they can just have them sit at the house. But for food, just have a larder or fruit cellar where you store food would be good, I think asking to be as detailed as Wurm Online might be cool, but too much. But, it would settle players not logging in for long periods of time. But what about people who can't log in daily? Have it so if they are in the house, no upkeep is required?

As for system resources, this wouldn't be a WoW level of game, so dealing with mass amount of people shouldn't be too bad. But for the A.I. time will tell, we will have to just test it and find out I guess.

The problem is if I do that, then it restricts players, I am aiming towards everyone freely being online. For a test, that sounds like a great way to see how players deal and like the persistent character system.
