Shadowmapping problem

Hello,
I came up with something I need to fix in my shadowmappingsystem. I started up with pointlights, which worked out almost fine.
But I noticed that things farer away from the light get lowresolution shadows. That would be fine for a lamp/latern etc, but not for the sun. So I swichted to directional lightning, which gives me lowresolution shadows everywhere, even when I use a large texture.

So, what can I do to make the shadows better?

The most common solution for sun shadows is cascaded shadow maps.
