No offence intended, but that Wikipedia page is about as clear and simple an explanation as you'll be able to find. You can find an alternative explanation at W3Schools, but if you didn't understand the Wikipedia explanation it's unlikely to be more helpful.


If English isn't your first language then perhaps you could have a friend or family member with a better understanding explain it to you...


Are there any specific questions you have about using the alt attribute?
