The use of tags to be made into "common tags".

I made a joke thread about LNK2001 being made into a forum because of the almost infinite number of threads about it. However, speaking seriously, I think a tag for LNK2001 should be made. Also a tag for ECS (entity component system), component, entity, and so on. My point is that topics that are revisited often should have topic tags available for use that are standard. Is there any system in place for this to happen in the near future?

It would be nice that as a person adds tags to their thread that a list of threads would start to appear. Or even someone being able to search by tag.

What do you mean by this?

Basically something similar to SO.

So let's say I start a thread titled "What's the best paradigm for functional languages?". Now on SO, a list of threads would start popping up based on the title (in terms of similarity). However, based on my proposal, I would start to add tags, such as "functional". At this point, a list of threads that have the tag "functional" would show (let's say it shows on a side frame for now). Then I add the tag "paradigm". Now threads that have tags "functional" or "paradigm" would show. The more tags I add, the more results I get. Now the more likely way would be to show tags that have "functional" and "paradigm". That way the number of similar threads lessen not explode in number.

I hope that was clearer.

What would the purpose of this list be? Would this list be on the same page you are posting from?

The purpose of the list would be to show you threads that have similar content, similar questions, or at the very least that have the same tags. That way someone could look at these "similar" threads before posting. Or as separate functionality, do a search based on the tags given. And yes, the list of threads would be on the same page as the thread you are creating. Well that's how I'm currently envisioning it.

Ah, gotcha. I think with SO though the point is to avoid posting the same question again no? I had a tab that showed similar topics on the topic listing page but it was rarely used. SO tries to be a Wiki of sorts for answers, where we don't allow people to go back and publicly edit old posts. This might make finding duplicate posts less useful than you'd think.

Well even if GDN doesn't let you edit or add to threads that have been dead for over 60 days (?), that thread still could have answered a question that you have now. I'm sure I'm not the only person who have looked at a thread and say to themselves "Didn't I see 3 people (who created 3 separate threads) ask this same question last week?" And most likely the same answers are given in all 4 threads. At least, if they do make a thread on the same subject, then there's the chance (no matter how slim) that they've looked over the old threads. Therefore they can tell us that they've followed the advice from threads X, Y, and Z and are stuck on something else.

Maybe I'm making "much ado about nothing"?

That tab didn't really jump out at you, though - one had to manually go look for it.

I think if a handful of highly-related topics popped up above the edit box, we'd have a lot fewer duplicates floating around...
