i think the original Tribes is the easiest game to mod, you dont need special tools, and the game is written entirely in a scripting language, so you can get a good grasp on how things work, just takes a little c++/perl knowledge

Well, Tribes 2 has a modest mod community and the tools really help but so does Unreal Tournament.

I''m sure you can teach yourself anything but it''s easier if there are people there to help you. Though I think the Quake3 is worth your time because their code''s pretty neat.
