(you cant just let your mom or sister learn Bash just to install a text editor in Linux right?)

Why not? Are mothers and sisters incompetent or not capable because they are women? Everyone CAN use all that stuff, it is only a matter of time investment. Also, there are MANY sisters and mothers out there who use this stuff much better than you, and many fathers and brothers who are absolutely clueless at it.

His point is not that they can't, but that they (computer-illiterate people in general, regardless of gender) shouldn't have to.

Pretty much. The terminal should be left for advanced stuff only extreme power users should bother touching, not for normal tasks like installing a program (and for the record, most distros come with a proper GUI for the package manager which in fact makes it easier to install stuff than on Windows since you can just go there, look what you need and install it).

And that was probably a bad example since most distros come with a text editor too =P But point still stands with other programs.

Don't pay much attention to "the hedgehog" in my nick, it's just because "Sik" was already taken =/ By the way, Sik is pronounced like seek, not like sick.

Ok....say what you want about microsoft, but they still dominate in the gaming world(it says gamedev.net right?).It has rivals like Sony on the console market, but microsoft has the PCs and the Xbox when it comes to gaming.

Even right now, they're still adding to the dx technology(Applause for that). Not to mention that the number of gamers is growing.

So,for me,untill someone actually comes up with a better os for games,I'll keep my windows.

Have you ever used Ubuntu or pretty much any newer Linux distro?

Huh, driver support is still a major pain in the ass... Fair enough, that boils down mostly to hardware vendors not caring about it at all, but that doesn't change the fact (there are other issues, but the driver one is the biggest). Also X11 being limited in rather stupid ways (e.g. fullscreen is not supported so it's done in an extremely hackish way that always has some issues, and multimonitor support also tends to break quite easily).

I think this "my os is better", "no mine" is pointless. Noone will switch cause of that, people just see the app/game they want to use was made for one of the os and then use that even if its worse.

I've had more issues with multiple monitors in Win7 than in Mint14

(i'm sticking to the opensource drivers on my work machine though since i have to boot into windows to use Unity anyway, nvidias proprietary drivers have caused all kinds of havoc in the past so i don't really want to bother with them on a non-gaming PC), X11 being an outdated pile of steaming dogpoop is pretty much on target though. (Hopefully Wayland or Mir will replace it on the desktop atleast in the not so distant future)

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!
