Developing a community around my game.

Hey guys,

I am trying to start developing a community around my game. It is still pretty rough at the moment but I figured it is never too early to start trying to get people interested. Thought this could be a good way to get some comments on how to generate buzz about my game while it is still in development.

Thanks.

Are you asking how to start a community? Or is that post supposed to be the cornerstone of the new community?

Here are my suggestions in a linear fashion but in no particular order:

- Make YouTube videos of your game with you playing it. Be sure to have a personality.

- Implement a gameplay mechanic or two that has never been done.

- Make a "sub-reddit" on Reddit.

- Post on 4chan.

- Get people on YouTube who have garnered a large following playing games to play your game.

- Get a website to review your game.

- Implement a multiplayer system in the game.

- Minimize the bugs in the game software.

- MAKE THE GAME FUN.

Well ...

Create a web site of some kind {link}

Create a forum were you post updates and allow users to post stuff ( very important for community building ) {link}

Create a portfolio of constantly updated game art and graphics {link}

Create a blog were post updates and ideas about the game {link}

Create videos about the game {link}

Make sure to keep your website current with all your activity !!!

Hey thanks, for the advise guys :)

@Tom I guess it was ideas on how to start one.

These seem like some great resources. I might go looking for someone to manage that aspect of my game, haha. I am having enough trouble just keeping development on a timeline. However, I will endeavor to do it myself for now. I want to post something on facebook every Monday so I think I might need to partner with another developer that wants to swap attention, so to say.

@FlyingSatin I'll go make a sub-reddit now.

@Shippou I have been meaning to make a game specific website so I guess I'll go ahead and start that soon.

Thank you for your help :) If you know any game developers that want to swap game plugs on their social media let me know :)

Clearly, that's how all the other respondents read your post, so I took a clue from them and moved your post to the appropriate forum.

If you know any game developers that want to swap game plugs...

Please use the Classifieds for this kind of talk (not the discussion forums).

@Tom being in business seems weird, but I will trust your judgement. Still new to the forum so might happen a bit :) Will also check out the classifieds. thx

You're asking about marketing your game. That's what community is -- marketing.

We don't have a marketing forum, so Business is the next best thing.

Yeah that sounds about right. Thanks Tom. I actually have been discussing marketing at work... I don't quite have the hang of it but yeah it does seem to be based around community.
