hi.i am just wondering where i can get information about developing for PS1 and PS2.I am fully competent with C++ ,Java (and JavaBeans) aswell as VB,Pascal and am familiar with a few graphic design utensils.is the a certain set of APIs for this type of games programming or do you have to buy or rent a license????
Hm, I'm not into console gaming at all, let alone programming them, but I remember reading something way back when the PS1 was cutting-edge.
There was some black (cool color, that for a PS1) Playstation1 which came with C++ libraries and other software and some cables to upload the stuff you made from PC to PS.
I believe it was called the 'Yarouze' or something. (could be completely wrong, it was long ago and it was a short article)
I'm not sure if it's available outside Japan (if it's available there at all) but this box seemed the way to go if you're not a professional software developer.
By the way, it was an official Sony product, so contacting them or a Sony dealer will probably clear things up

Airhead Zoom is referring to the PS2 in Japan that ran linux. There are talks of releasing a US version, but no conclusive reports that it is going to happen for sure.
No, anonymous, I am positive about it being a PS1.

Airhead was right. Sony made a cheap dev kit for the PS1 called the Yaroze. It is no longer availabe through Sony, though...

And to develope for PS2, you have to licsence the dev kit from Sony. And to get the dev kit, you pay somewhere around $10,000 or more, plus you have to be an approved developer.

It seems a bit in the early stages now, but it is both free and available. They say that it will be easier to use, as well. Only time will tell.

If you want to get a PS1 black box (the development kit) watch e-bay and other online auctions; occassionally they are sold there, as Sony no longer sells them. If you want to develop, do some google searching. I spent an hour doing this last week and turned up tons of information and plenty of downloadable tools, to the point of discovering that it was not what I hoped it was and am not really pursuing it. But figure that out for yourself.
