Are design patterns crucial for game development at the beginning?

Hi, I have a question.

Whenever I try to develop a game, I end up with problems in software design which I am usually unable to fix. So I was wondering what could or couldn't help you until I stoped at "design patterns".

Are they crucial for a beginner in game development area or not? What would you recommend to read to learn about software design or OOP in this case??

Please help! I have problem with FPS

Hi guys.

I am working on my game called Retro Invaders it's like Space Invaders.

And I have problem with FPS...

Well I have found some functions for FPS for example on http://www.sdltutorials.com/ and these functions are used only in movement of entities...

Well it looks well, but my computer uses during the game 100% CPU. And if I use SDL_Delay in the end of the loop, the computer uses 12-15% of CPU.

This is also well, but the game looks like it runs and halts and runs and halts.

Also surfaces are not blitted properly

My question is... any idea how to solve this problem please?

How to make ship capable of shooting

I am working on my own space invaders I called it "Retro Invaders" and I have a problem.

I don't know how to figure out shooting. At the begginig of dealing with this problem I had a lot of ideas, but each of this idea failed.

Well I don't want some kind of complex weapon system. I just want shoot straight up from down.

Does anyone know how to make it?

If does, I would be very glad when I will know it.

I am writing in C/C++ using SDL, nothing more, nothing less.

Please help.
