In Topic: Java Networking impossible and erratic errors

Unfortunately as I said the errors just pop up and vanish mysteriously so the only possible way for me to catch one would be to record my screen while working and upload the video of it happening I guess.

But based on what I'm reading, it sounds like a bad idea to send multiple packets in quick succession that I need to arrive in order with UDP, which is one thing I'm doing.  Is it a better idea to condense data into one UDP packet then split it up after it's received?  For example something like

byte[ ] { Packet ID, value 1, value 1, value 1, value 2, value 2, value 2, }

as opposed to

byte[ ] { Packet ID }

byte[ ] { value 1, value 1, value 1 }

byte[ ] { value 2, value 2, value 2, }

If so then what kind of conventions should I use to indicate the data type and the start/end of a value?  Also, can you help me understand how sending a UUID will let the program know that the packets were duplicated, lost or out of order?

If you have unlimited supplies you can build some kind of motion detector which would pulverize zombies on sight if they enter your building though.

hm I should have specified basic supplies like food and water

Racoon City of course, would be easy enough to barricade myself into a nice and easily defended building and work on projects in peace with only the sound of hundreds of hungry zombies to disturb the peace.

If they know you're in there they can find a way in eventually though

In Topic: Game genres, what do you want to develop?

26 April 2012 - 11:57 PM

What I really want is to combine many genres in one game/universe. Honestly I think that's the future of gaming. Since what I think draws me to games the most is deep, complex multiplayer interaction, (hype alert) Dust 514 coming out really got me thinking of all the possibilities in combining game genres. I mean when you have the entire universe at your disposal there's pretty much nothing you can't include and integrate. For example Dust is a shooter integrated with Eve the space combat game, but what if you integrated a city building/management sim to manage the planets, and some sort of pve exploration/adventure to explore new planets? What if the Facebook users playing Farmville were actually managing farms on the planets in Eve to produce resources for the Eve players? CCP has demonstrated that something like this is easily possible, and that's the kind of thing I want to develop in general. Even if those ideas aren't all practical and would take a lot of work, that's what I want to do most. I'm more in the field for the passion and the drive to create something

But in the absence of that I kinda want to make an action based space combat console game, just because that is what sounds fun to me at the moment lol
