Devastating video from the Mississippi Gulf Coast
I'm convinced.. Hurricane Katrina singlehandedly changed the Gulf Coast for years to come. With the Atlantic Ocean being in a 20-30 year cycle of increased tropical activity (FYI, it's not global warming) chances are this area is going to get hit again in the next few years, which is definitely bef…

Hurricane Katrina
Wow, what can be said.. It seems like I only post about hurricanes or tragic events in my journal anymore, but Hurricane Katrina is likely going to go down in history as the most devastating hurricane in US history. For those who pay attention to hurricanes, and how could you not with the media cov…

Real quick..
I only have two items I would like to make a public statement about. I do not particularly feel like writing, but I am feeling compelled to say something about these particular items.

First, to the fools planting bombs in London, all I have to say is: karma. May the faceless lunacy you displayed tod…

Got a contract on a house - now the real fun begi
Put an offer in for a house on Saturday, and it was accepted that afternoon. We'll be putting my house on the market sometime this week, so I've been spending a lot of time getting it ready to show. Closing for the new home isn't until August 7, so I have plenty of time. Let's just hope no hurrican…

GDC

Wow, what can I say about GDC this week. I hope to put more about the experiences we had at GDC, but I do want to publicly thank the GameDev.net GDC Press staff. You guys did an awesome job. I was hoping to get a chance to tell you all in person, but I didn't get that opportunity for most of you. G…

Interview tips
Here are some tips if you're interviewing for an entry-level or internship position. These tips are based on my experiences of interviewing people for entry-level positions, including what I looked for in candidates and what would be automatic NO's for a candidate. I'm generally a hard ass when it …

XM and GPS already useful
Wouldn't you know it, the XM Satellite Radio and Magellan GPS mentioned in the previous entry saved me from getting into work very late today. I travel on I-4 here in FL on my way to work in the morning, and shortly after I get onto the interstate, I notice a long, long line of cars sitting bumper …

Techno toys
The first would be XM Satellite Radio (stock: XMSR). The receiver I bought is the Delphi Roady 2, which has turned out to fit nicely in my Ford Escape. They also have an adapter for the Roady 2 to have portable walkman-style satellite radio, and I'm considering purchasing that as well.

My other tech…

Marathon no more
Two weeks ago I was supposed to run in a half-marathon in Orlando. Well I ended up running along the beach instead in Daytona Beach. I marked out the proper 13.1 mile distance and went at it.

Mind you, this was a Saturday that was cold and rainy, by Florida standards (mid-50's with rain and wind). A…

Marathon update
Last week was a little rough for training with the holidays and such, but here's what we have:

Monday: 1.5 hour run, at a pace to get about 10-11 miles
Tuesday: no running, had a date
Wednesday: 7.5 hours of driving time in holiday traffic to the Keys, but then proceeded to run for 45 minutes due to t…

Of Marathons and Men
Since Dave is doing a weekly weigh-in, I figured I'd do a weekly progress report on my marathon training.

I'm training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon to be held in Myrtle Beach, SC on February 19, 2005. I've never run a marathon before, nor have I really ever desired to run a marathon, but I was aske…

On elections, streaks, and curses..
The Washington Redskins were defeated by the Green Bay Packers today. It was the Redskins last home game prior to the election. Does this mean the 36 year streak of the last Redskins home game result "predicting" the election outcome will hold true? Will Kerry be our next president? Or is this the …

It's my favorite time of year..
GO SOX. Unbelievable. Tying the series, in my opinion, shows that the Red Sox are the better team (over the NY Yankees for the uninitiated). They have the momentum, they have the desire, and they have the talent to earn their bid into the World Series tomorrow night. I'll have my seat at the bar fo…

XGDX Weekend
Heading out to Mountain View for XGDX tomorrow afternoon. Should be a fun weekend. Reminds me we need to get the new GameDev t-shirts made soon. I was hoping we'd be able to get them made for XGDX, but we were too slow on ordering.

In addition, happenings with GameDev are getting more exciting by th…

Very bad
Jeanne came and went, and for the first time in a hurricane, I did not lose power. So come Friday or Saturday night (or both), I will be celebrating my lack of power outages. A really sad thing is that today when I got into work, I noticed on my whiteboard outside my office that everyone had starte…

Jeanne, Jeanne, Jeanne
Hurricane Jeanne is on its way. Last couple of forecasts have it headed right over my house sometime Sunday afternoon. Yay. There's talk in the local media that because of all the help Ivan victims are getting, it's possible that the time for us to get electricity back could be twice as long. Tomor…

Just an update...
Added a bunch of new quotes to the quote database, which incidentally hasn't been updated in years. This is the same quote database the random quotes on the GameDev.net front page are pulled from. In the past we've been told people enjoy the motivational/inspirational quotes, so that's what I added…

Resuming normalcy
Life is returning back to normal after the storm.

I took a whirlwind trip to Chicago Sunday and Monday to meet with DeVry University folk about some degree programs and their curriculum. Hopefully I was of some service.

In about 4 days I'll be heading out to London for GDC Europe and ECTS. Considerin…

Electricity.. finally
I have power. I really don't have much else to say at the moment except that I have electricity flowing through my walls after 5 days of camping out in my own house. Hurricanes are fun until they snap power lines. I have pictures of some damage.. downed trees and stuff like that.. I'll post soon.

Can I borrow some of your free time?
Free time? What is that?

I got myself sick from working 120+ hours since last Monday. Good job, huh. Hopefully I get better before Saturday when a decent sized swell is supposed to be hitting the coast. But hey, at least our project at work is damn near perfect, for software at least. No crashes, no…

MSN is letting you listen to the new live Pearl Jam CD coming out next week for free.. streaming of course. Check it out at http://entertainment.msn.com/netcal/default.aspx?netcal=727. In my opinion, it's the best live CD of Pearl Jam.

Two entries in a month- what's the world coming to
I had a little idea for a shareware product, so I'm working on that right now. It's actually a tool that I've been needing myself for quite some time now, but I haven't been able to find one suitable for my needs. So, naturally as a software engineer, I'm going to create my own. It's getting to the…
