DEMO!

Published January 15, 2011
Okay, scary moment. After about two years now, I've finally decided to release a playable demo of Squishy.

Squishy uses DirectX 9.0C so I've provided two installers. If you know you have the correct DX runtime installed, you can choose the smaller link to speed up the download. The larger installer will update the DX runtime for you.

Full Installer (17.6MB)
Game Only (No DX) (3.03MB)

There is an intro and one demo level (the training level) so it doesn't last very long I'm afraid. I'm more interested in getting a bit of feedback to help motivate me, reports on bugs that may occur on different systems and so on.

As always, as much feedback as possible is requested. It's been a long time since the last demo which was very well received and I hope the improvements since then are appreciated.

Thanks for your interest.

Interesting concept and very enjoyable. Works like a charm on my machine.
Does the program log anything anywhere, because I did not found such a file in the installers directory?

Hey, thanks for testing.

No - it doesn't create a log file. It stores your settings in your user application data folder (depends which version of Windows where this is) but this will all be cleared out if you run the uninstaller.

I don't know whether I agree with the terms of your license agreement.

Very fun, I liked it.
I would like if when detracting your arms (and pulling yourself upwards or objects toward you) more momentum being gained, so you can shoot yourself upward. The game GUI worked very smoothly, and the ingame interactions (doors, switches, boxes) functioned correctly; excellent job!

I did get momentarily stuck:

(Moving in any direction wouldn't work)

But that was resolved by shooting my arms and I got unstuck.

Hey Servant, thanks for testing and the feedback.

I'll be perfectly honest - I had to limit the velocity that Squishy moves at because he is built from a bunch of shapes and springs and was exploding when he hit walls if he moved too fast.

Glad you managed to unstick yourself okay and sorry about the licence - I appreciate it is a bit restrictive but you've agreed now so I own your soul. :)

Wonderful! Enjoying it!

Unfortunately, it didn't work on my old machine (probably due to the GeForce4Ti), but it ran fine on my development machine.

Hey DWN, thanks for testing.

When you say it didn't work, did it crash or just run slowly? It will run on my partners little netbook thing which has no real graphics hardware, just a bit slowly.

I have to say that I love the demo. On the bug side my computer crashed when I tried to download the installer. Though I don't really know if that was your installer or Firefox/vista freaking out on me.

The game looks and plays great but on a gameplay front I think that there being some way of telling if the switch you have to press needs a block or not would be beneficial to the game. I could see it frustrating a player to get to a remote switch only to find out that they should have carried a block with them.

Other than that the game plays great and you have a winning concept. I hope you keep up the great work.

Pretty cool demo I must say. I like the gameplay idea very much, also all this use of physics makes it pretty funny and interesting.

One thing I have to say: Squishy looks rather mean than friendly, is this supposed to be? :P
Thanks - your comments about the buttons are interesting. I wanted to get the player to just push a button first before having to deal with holding one down, but I agree that could be confusing.

Ref the crash, it's just an exe sitting on some webspace so I don't think my program is the cause - maybe my webhost?

Thanks for testing. Yeah, Squishy is supposed to look a bit angry. Like the suicides in the intro, I like the idea of mixing cutesy elements with darkness.

great work !

I liked the intro, the controls respond very well, the desing is clean, and the license is so.... short

I stay tuned for futures update !

After selecting 1024x768 and 1x1 interp and pressing okay, it hung and the Visual Studio Just-in-Time Debugger reported a problem. I also tried 640x480, and it switched into the correct screen mode, but then the same thing happened. I wouldn't worry about it, though - although this machine (WinXP SP 2+ / P4 2.4GHz / 2.5GB RAM / GeForce4Ti) works great for me as a testing computer, I don't even know that it meets the min reqs of DX9.

I don't think so. I've had this happen to me more often recently so I'm thinking that its my computer. Everything has been slowed down to a crawl oso I wouldn't worry about it. That is unless someone else starts having problems.

Nice demo. And if it took you two years to release this, then I have hope for my project :D I agree with the above comment about having the two button types look different. Just making them be different colors should be enough. Also, on my screen (22 inch, 1680 x 1050), some of the textures, especially the ground/terrain textures, I felt could use some additional detail. I dig the clean and simple design, but it was a little too much for my preferences. Even a two-tone brown pattern for the dirt, and then the leaf pattern on top of that. But that's just opinion and preference, certainly not a bug.

I enjoyed it, and am looking forward to play the full game.

Great so far!

The music in the title screen is really chipper considering the hellish, fiery landscape in the background :D

I have trouble still keeping track of my arms...it'd be nice if they were labelled with L and R instead of just the colors (or, better, keep the colors but only show them to the left or right half of the "hand" depending on which button it's assigned to) so that I could better track which was which...

I had the same problem with the orange/blue portals in Portal, so you're at least in good company :)

Your transitions between scenes are lovely! Very smooth, very nice :)

Keep rockin' it, it's looking/playing pretty solid!

Had to play it twice to get a better feeling, needs some practice, of course.

Runs smooth and looks polished. Good work. (By the way: Are you aiming for a 64k contest with that small a installer ?)

Had to go for the stucking issue. True, one can get stuck really bad - and my first reflex was trying to duck pressing S. But I could always free myself with my hands :)

And you can "tarzan" quite fast using one hand alone ... yehaaa!

One question: Are you going to support game-pads (and aiming at consoles, at that) or other input schemes ? Well, admittedly, not only the feeling would differ greatly, also the difficulty (meaning: game-pad is probably harder to play). Let alone redesigning of levels :/

PS: About the license: I think this is the first ever installer license I read and accepted consciously ;)

Great work! Ran smoothly for me and played well. I was disappointed at the lack of secrets hidden throughout the level - I spent a lot longer than I needed to exploring the tip tops of the first area. One suggestion I have is to consider making spacebar a release-both-arms button. I kept finding myself forgetting which arm was which and accidentally making a second one. Spacebar was a natural thing to press when I wanted to release. I also found the blur in the background of the initial menu disconcerting until the menu popped up. That was just something that rubbed me the wrong way, I guess, not really much of an issue.

Great work! The demo runs very smoothly for me on my cheap and nasty HD3450 at 1680x1050.

You don't need to pick up any boxes in the demo level; you can just nudge the small one onto the switch (which I did by accident the first time I played through the demo).

I'm looking forwards to where you take this!

Thanks Ben.

Sure, you can knock the boxes around as well.

Thanks for testing.

Thanks for testing rip-off. Don't think there's a simple solution to getting stuck like that but you can normally get out using your arms.

Worked perfectly for me, no problems at all. Took a while to get used to the controls, but that is probably just me :). I kept wanting to use space to jump.

Keep up the good work!

No complete solution, true. However if the doors were big enough that squishy and one big box could fit through comfortably, it would prevent the vast majority of problems I imagine.

Really nice and very polished. The graphics style/setting reminded me a lot of World of Goo (which is a good thing) and I think the system of swinging yourself around is an interesting concept and could be a lot of fun. Even on the small level provided it was fun swinging around all the platforms. Keep up the good work!

Hello,

Tried the demo and liked it a lot. :)

Just a little typo in the intro: it's desperate, not desparate.
