Ramblings of a DirectX MVP playing at the sharp end of 3D graphics
Afternoon all,
I'm still very busy doing non-DirectX work so nothing hugely exciting to talk about along those lines.
I do have one thing that I've been contemplating lately that is worthy of a journal post. I'm particularly interested in any feedback you, my trusted reader, might have [smile]

hmm, so it's been a little over a month since I last posted anything in this journal.
Sadly I don't have anything particularly exciting or useful to post today. Just thought I'd set my "out of office" message so to speak [smile]

I've got Dr. Dobb's newsletter subscribed against my work email address and quite a few interesting things pop-up that I like to read. At the very least it's something to do at work [smile]

I started to implement lighting for '3D Pipes in Direct3D 10' today (I've basically grouped together the lighting framework for the 'alpha 2' release).
The first thing was to add a per-vertex normal to both types of forward renderer - easy enough job, but hooking up the IA signatures and so on requi…
Anyone reading this going to be at Microsoft's MIX:UK 07 event next week?
A while back I got invited to help out at the event due to my MVP status. It's not exactly my area of specialism (not a lot of DirectX in web development!) but it looks like an interesting event nonetheless.

I've just pressed the appropriate magic buttons to make [Alpha-1] Simple Geometry Processing PoC the latest release for my '3D Pipes in Direct3D 10 project.
It's still pretty primitive and the only part that is likely to be of much interest is the instanced rendering path.

Okay, so a root cause to my previous ranting and mildly stroppy behaviour in the forums was that novice programmers lack some basic debugging skills. Which in itself is of no surprise (novice being the key word [wink]) but the frustrating part is that far too many are too lazy to pick up this skill…
So I'm routinely getting my arse kicked at Scrabulous on Facebook. Nothing special to this variant of Scrabble, just that I'm not very good at these things [lol]
I found a download of all 178691 words in the TWL dictionary. Nice big 460kb text file.

Okay, I appreciate I'll probably rub some people up the wrong way with this. It's 2.21am and I've been out in a latin bar in Fulham - The Mohito's were good, but the vanilla special wasn't, well, special.

It's been a while since I last posted simply due to not having anything exciting to write about! I'm not entirely sure what I've been doing but I seem to have had a general lack of free time, and any free time has been a a case of vegetating in front of the TV or reading a book. Damn those endless …
Right, I suppose this entry will count as Saturday but for me it's still Friday ([cool]). Anyway, I've been so busy with work lately that I just haven't had time to progress my own personal projects. Writing SqlCe performance profiling tools to analyze the performance of various mobile devices is q…
Right, figured I should just check in to prove I'm still alive [grin]
I will eventually get around to doing some development work - I've purposefully been taking a "holiday" now that the book is done. But I already have that nagging feeling - my three letter acronym's are getting lonely (ok, the IDE…

Right,
I just sent off 11 zip files totalling 27.5mb to Wolfgang Engel as the final copy of my section of the "Programming Vertex, Geometry and Pixel Shaders" book.
Editing would appear to have added 2,564 words to the original draft, meaning it'll be around 120 printed pages I imagine.

I may not be some multi-decade veteran of software development (who berates JavaSchool (ok, guilty on this one) and would rather write in a real language like Fortran or PL/X) but I know enough to know that "process" comes and goes like fashion.

We got the technical review back on our initial 'finished' book manuscript. Proved to be an interesting read with a lot of valid points (no idea who reviewed it, but they know their stuff!). Now the proverbial ball is back in my court.

Okay, so I don't normally post "old and wise" comments like Promit or ApochPiQ do (not to imply they are old or wise, just that they do a good job of bluffing) but just for a change.

Right, not a particularly interesting entry today. More a "out of office" notification.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my previous journal entry. LachlanL made an interesting comment that I feel deserves a full/proper post [smile]
I'd be very interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on this. Feel free to leave a comment!

Why am I still using Windows XP?
'tis the question I've been asking myself the last few days.
I was an early adopter of XP so it's probably been 5 or so years that it's been my primary OS and it's also, unsurprisingly, Fujitsu's standard OS.

Right, I closed off the last work item and decided that the foundation build was done.

Given I have little else to post at the moment, check out this thread over on B3D: DirectX 10 = DirectX 9 for Vista. Not that if offers anything new, but yet another "why won't evil M$ give us D3D10 on XP" thread. I usually don't struggle to explain technical concepts to non-technical people, but t…
I think I'm gonna like codeplex - I've been messing about with it since yesterday evening and it's been both powerful and pretty intuitive to use.
I've got the 'Team Explorer' plug-in for VSTS, so I can do a lot of work straight from the IDE [grin]

Right, so I'm finally kicking off this project. It's already spent enough time as doodles on my pad of paper so I think it's only fair that I actually do something about it [grin]
The first step was to sort out my development environment. New software:

With the main bit of content out of the way for our D3D10 book project we're now on to the technical proof reading. For obvious reasons it'd be nice if the work we published was accurate... [grin]

So I was going to sit down and do some preliminary work on 'Pipes 3D' in D3D10 - I've got the basic plan sorted and I just want to run through a few PoC's.
