Drinking moderately wine helps have a good heart (yes, this is not a legend, it has been observed).
Drinking more than 3 glasses a day increases the risk of cancer.

Other than that, it''s nice to be merry once in a while But I can generally do without.

Nah, I don''t like red wine, but I can drink white wine. Usually I drink cider, or sometimes a drink. But I still I haven''t been drunk.

I wonder if coleco will re-read this thread, hehe. Yeah, i''ve posted when i''m pissed (after a late night). My liver doesn''t feel very good these days actually, i might have to have a check up one of these days. But then again it could just be the other diet, oops i mean real food

Drinking is NOT theraputic. This whole nonsense about how having a glass of red wine every day being healthy is misleading. The reason why its red wine and not, say vodka, is because of the anti-oxidants found in the seeds of red grapes...you will benefit as much, if not more, by drinking red grape juice. Alcohol kills brain cells, even when taken in small amounts. And does cause cirhossis after years of usage.

...retard. It was right for you to post anonymously.

hmmmm... I don''t think we need to get into an argument about whether alcohol is healthy for you (physically, or mentally), but let me just say that there is no proof that alcohol kills brain cells. The misleading experiments that point to evidence that alcohol kills brain cells involves pouring pure alcohol onto exposed brain cells.

Besides that, I''m not going to let the idea that something is killing me stop me from doing that. You know, breathing air kills you. The same process that aids in energy creation also speeds cell degredation through the process of oxidation. If you know what''s good for you, maybe you should stop breathing... stop all that dangerous oxygen from entering your body.

This is not meant as a flame, this is simply me pointing out information that shows noone has the right to say "doing such and such is a bad thing to do". I''ll never cease to do something based solely on someone else saying it''s a bad thing to do. On the other hand, if someone comes to me with a completely objective view on the effects of doing something, I''ll weigh out the advantages/disadvantages and cease to do it if the disadvantages are significantly greater. Sure, you only have one liver, and drinking excessively can do a good job of wrecking that liver... but note that I said excessively. Moderation is a very important thing when indulging in any activity.

To answer the original question, "I''m drunk... is this a bad thing?" I think that nothing is a bad thing unless you (the person doing it) know of the disadvantages, recognize that the implications of doing it are more hazardous than helpful, and loathe yourself for commiting to it. In other words, if you feel bad about doing it (knowing that it is not a good thing for you), then maybe it is a bad thing for you to do. But even that does not determine if it is a bad thing for someone else.

I, myself, think drinking (among other things) is not a bad thing, and until I find a reason otherwise, will not think it is a bad thing, in moderation. If you''re still really bothered about the possible health causes of doing something, just think of all the people who are trying so hard to live longer, then think of the resulting population growth, and consider yourself aiding the cause against overpopulation by having a great time while you''re alive and not living till you''re 100.

These are just some of my thoughts. I won''t go on any more about it. Do what you like. And don''t discourage others just because of your beliefs. Thanks for listening.

void*: I was being too general, I''m sorry.

quote:
Source:Katzung BG, ed. Basic and Clinical Pharmacology. Appleton & Lange: California, 1989.

Alcohol may not actually destroy neurons in the brain directly, but it can change the properties of the membranes of these cells and can modify their signaling patterns. Therefore, alcohol can certainly have harmful effects on the functioning of neurons in the brain. In acute instances of excessive alcohol consumption, the drug will cause a variety of changes in the firing of neurons that can lead to the well-known side effects of slurred speech, loss of coordination, impaired judgment, etc. These changes are reversible over time. With long-term consumption of large amounts of alcohol, however, more permanent and damaging changes can occur in the nervous system. Tingling and loss of sensation in the extremities, decrease in memory, impaired motor and intellectual functions, and even amnesia can result.

You''re not wrong, I just thought that no one would appriciate details, so I used "Brain Cells".

What really happens is that Alcohol damages dendrites, which reduces message traffic between the neurons. Not killing neurons, but effectively rendering them useless.

And although it has not been clinically proven yet, it has not been clinically disproven either. As for experiments that were conducted by pouring alcohol over exposed brain cells, tell me where you found that, that experiment can be used to prove very little and would not have its place in a professional environment.

As I always say, nowadays the question is not if you want to stay healthy or not, rather what do you want to die from ... choose wisely and you *might* end up dying in your bed (I think it''s still the number one place people die in), otherwise, well, plan ahead, knowing how you are going to die. Ain''t science a nice and wonderful thing ?

For the moment, I am hesitating between cyrhosis, suicide, brain tumors, and old age. The latter being number one, I think.

I forget the exact name of the source (so you can go ahead and discredit my statement, if you want), but it was in a neuro-biology textbook that I used for a paper I did in college. It was one of those things that struck me as strange... among other experiments including administering ethanol to find the effects of "alcohol" (though, what that does to your system would be obviously different than a 5% per-Vol. beer), and giving alcohol to babies (again, the effect that has would be obviously different than what happens to a grown individual). Basically, all these experiments never pointed towards a connection to occasional drinking of commercially-available alcoholic substances, and even those experiments that used high-proof commercially alcoholic substances involved large amounts over long periods of time, before finding even loose connections to health dangers of alcohol consumption. Therefore, I decided that there was no conclusive evidence that alcohol (in moderation) is unhealthy.

You seem to agree with me that there is no conclusive evidence that it is unhealthy, but you stand by the idea that there''s no evidence the other way, either. I can''t blame you for thinking that, and many people will agree that it is better to be safe than sorry. The reason I posted was not to attack the idea that people shouldn''t drink, I only wanted to dispute the idea that noone should drink. I also wanted to respond to the idea that drinking is innately a bad thing, and I wanted to offer the idea that people should do what they want, as long as they are educated on the implications of their actions.

Even judging by your quote, it requires large amounts over long periods of time to do temporary damage, and larger amounts over longer time to do some amount of permanent damage. People should know these things, true, but they shouldn''t be scared away by a vague statement like, "alcohol kills brain cells".

Unfortunately, people who are on my side in this argument often bring up the "but it''s fun" reason, or the "i''ll do what I want to if you say I can''t" cause. Some resort to name-calling and ignorance when they don''t have enough facts to stand their argument on. These things give my argument a bad name. But I had to bring my views in when I saw you using personal attacks to make your point. (So far you are the only one to use name-calling to further your point)

I''m not trying to say that you should try to get drunk. I respect your decision to not get drunk. I''m also not trying to say that experiments on health hazards of certain substances should be stopped... I think it''s good to know the possible risks of doing something, so that people can make educated decisions on whether or not to do something.

It might become clear by now that I am not only talking about alcohol being a good or bad thing, but about nearly any action or substance that people are capable of doing. Unfortunately, because of the stigma that society attaches to some of these activities, I don''t want to argue the details, because those arguments usually turn into people defending their cause without much use of facts. (often because there are no conclusive facts on the matter)

I do, however, want to reiterate my belief that I stated above, when I said that people should be free to do whatever they want, without fear of persecution, so long as they acknowledge the implications of those activities, and so long as they do not try to impose their decision on everyone around them. Society too often decides for us what is right and wrong, without giving us solid reasons, only saying "it''s bad".

ok, before anonymous starts jumping on me, I was responding to:

quote:

firahs:

And yes, being drunk IS bad.

when I said that people ought not to tell others what is right and wrong, good and bad.

and, later:
quote:

firahs:

...retard. It was right for you to post anonymously.

spurned my response about using things other than facts to back up your cause.

as for you, anonymous... you say the reason people are so touchy is because of the anonymity of the internet as though anonymity is a bad thing... yet, you use an anonymous post to present your point. What does that say?

Note that I am in no way trying to hide my identity, and based on information in my profile, you could contact me in various other ways if you were so inclined. But that is unimportant, since I am not here to be belligerant, I am here to discuss my beliefs on the subject in a broader context, and am open to anything that someone else has to say on the matter to counter my beliefs.

When I say that people should be free to do what they want, that includes being free to not do what someone else wants, and also (though I dislike it) free to tell others whatever they want, including that "X is a bad thing". Just be sure that I will respond to that statement, and invite any (reasonable) argument to the contrary.

Besides, it''s been a while since I held this discussion, and I''d like to see if there actually is someone out there that can give me a good reason why certain things should be unequivocally decided for us.
