Why do you want to ban gay marriage?

Will someone who thinks gays shouldn't be allowed to marry please explain your view. I'm really curious. I hear all of the conservatives say they support the federal bannation of gay marriage because they want to protect it. How do two men or woman getting married endanger marriage? If your argument is that marriage is a christian idea, than why do you not go ape shit over non christians hetero-sexuals marrying? If you retort and tell me marriage is a religious idea, than why don't you go ape shit for non religious hetero-sexuals people marrying? If you tell me it's because gay people are more likely to get a divorce and mock the moral standards that the union of marriage commands than shouldn't you get your head out of your ass and look around you? Hetero-sexuals have been fucking up marriage since it was invented by man(not by god). I really see no good reason why two men or women shouldn't be allowed to marry. They certainly aren't hurting anybody, and there are much more important issues in this world.

They're afraid they'll turn gay, their kids will turn gay, and everybody will become gay and we'll all live in this gay paradise.

Watch what you say around here man. People will rate you down for "starting shit" if you're not careful.

As for an answer? I dont really know. I just think people arent ready to give homosexuals any leeway yet. They figure "Give them an inch..."

I like it when people like Rush Limbaugh cry out against same-sex marriages, stating that it will ruin the sanctity of marriage.

News flash people: Rush is on his THIRD marriage now. Till death do you part my ass.

Hypocrisy, whenever I see the irony or lies in between the lines, it gives me satisfaction, because I now realize I'm listening to the most dangereous, selfish, and remoreless liar. I didn't know Rush was on this third, but when he talks about protecting marriage, I just want punch in the face and rip out his spleen.

To your comment about the rating. When ever I'm worried that I might lose rating because of a post, I make it a point clarify my thoughts and then post it no matter what. That's the thing I hate about the rating system the most, people censor themselves and sometime say things they do not mean, because they believe their being to controversal.

My rating has gone from 980-100-989-1030-1000+-1050. I guess alot of people strongly agree and strongly disagree. I'm more careful about letting the system sculpt my thoughts than letting it give me an object rating. If you think a post of your is going to get you rated down, than I say post it, because it's probably something important. It might be the current mainstream idea, but oh well, being real and truthful is more important than spin and deciet.

Are you proposing to get rid of legal marriage entirely then?

I am aginst government involvement in ANY marriage. Marriage is inherently a religous idea, having come from religion and remaining in religion for a very large part. What I am for is the government rolling back to the concept of the civil union.

The civil union is simply the legal obligations and rights currently associated with government based marriage. It also specifies that the government does not believe it is somehow the arbitrator of whether people are married in every religion of the people of the US. Homosexuals should be allowed into civil union, then each religion can decide whether to create a marriage from there.

Also with the creation of the concept of the civil union I think a lot of thought needs to be put into the purpose of the government acknowledging these unions. Is it simply that these units are more efficient? Is the background idea that they will raise children? Whatever the purpose of the civil union, it should be an actual requirement. IE, if the point of the civil union is raising the next generation, then all couples that become civil unions should have children.

I'm not saying what the requirements should be, but I do think a significant amount of thought needs to be put into them.

So far everyone of you who has posted don't seem to support banning gay marriage. How is this community and the one I live in(California) so different from the world.

You know what, in the end my friends, the South actually won :( The civil war was a front. They're may be a few sane people in the south, but 90%+ are freaking retarded.

Honestly, I'm one of those rare conservative Christians on this forum.

From my point of view, same sex marriages are bad because God tells us that only a man and woman should be together. I don't get your points about "why don't we go flippant over non-christians marrying." That makes absolutely no sense. God never said that it's only right for Christian men and Christian women to get married. You are twisting our belief that I, as a Christian, shouldn't marry another non-Christian. But looking away from the couple's religious standing, the point is that God tells us that only man and women should be together.

Now, from your point of view that doesn't make sense, because you probably don't abide by Scripture. In that case, I will just make the point that it's obvious that men are made to be with women and the other way around. My body is made to have sex with a female, and vice-versa. Why is it so common that males and females go together, and so "different" to be gay? It's going against our natural functions. You can push post-modern crap all you want, but we are ALWAYS going to have some moral standard and our minds are always going to judge things as "different" if they really are. And yes, by different I mean wrong. Sorry that I actually labelled something as wrong, it seems like we can't do that anymore.

Edit: I forget to talk about government involvement. Well, from my point of view, church and state SHOULD be tightly integrated. And the church should definitely be a leader in your life.

I am one of the few in the south apparantly that voted against the amendment. I just can't vote for an amendment that would restrict someone elses rights. The arguments I have heard for it are "it will ruin the sanctity of marriage", "it will make children think being gay is acceptable" or worse "it will make children want to be gay".(?!) Yes, the south is full of retards.

The best argument I've heard against it is that we don't know what the psychological effects are on children adopted by gay couples. Not necessarily that they'll be gay but they may have some other problems. That said there are tons of straight coupls who cause psychological problems to their kids... I'm not against it yet...If further study shows there are adverse effects then I will be.

That's because most of us are young. Younger people are much less likely to be opposed to gay marriage (which means, eventually it's going to be legal anyway). I feel like an old fogey here, and I'm in my late 20's.

I don't share your view that 90% of the South is freaking retarded, though. :)

What's ironic here now that you mention the Civil War, is how it comes back to haunt us. 150 years ago we marched into the South and pretty much irrevocably destroyed their way of life (for a good cause, admittedly), and then in typical American fashion spent a fraction of the money and effort rebuilding it. Today, the South still hasn't even fully recovered from the economic despair it was plunged into for around 100 years. Today much of it is still impoverished and a place of relatively scant economic opportunity (until recently.. I realize some of the cities are doing very well now). This economic growth perpetuates the cycle of poor education standards as well, which leads to many of the problems people bitch about on this board on a daily basis. My recommendation is not to call the South "freaking retarded", but instead that all of us should be open to the possibility (should it arise) to invest a little time, money, and effort into helping our American brothers. Shunning and hating them isn't going to solve our problems expediantly. If we have a culture of prejudice and hate towards the South (and it very much seems we do here in the Northeast), I don't see how it is ultimately benefits us. How about we have a culture of teaching and sharing instead? I realize we *hate* some of these laws, but fighting hate with equal hate is obviously not working.

OK, it's against christianity and it's 'unnatural'.

First of all, things should not be legislated against just because they're against your religion. Not everyone believes in your religion, and it's unfair to try and force them to live by it.

Second of all, who cares if it's 'unnatural'? Using computers is 'unnatural'. Living in houses build from bricks and concrete is 'unnatural'. Building churches is 'unnatural'. Flying in aeroplanes is 'unnatural'. There are a billion things that people do every day that are unnatural, so that argument holds no water either.

Finally, just suppose gay marriage was allowed. Would you even notice? Would it really make any difference to your life at all? I don't understand why people are so eager to ban something that has absolutely no impact on their lives at all.

I think the main deal is that "traditionally", marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman. Why does a union between a same-sex couple have to be called a "marriage"?

You are definately not going to change many people's point of view on same-sex issues, so why force it down thier throats? Call it something else. A "union", or whatever. IMO, I think some same-sex couples desperately wanting to call it a "marriage" are more interested in "making a point" than the "union" itself.

Then you dont belong in America friend. Want to live in a church state where religion makes all the rules? Move to the Vatican.

I like to live in the land of the *FREE* where I'm free to make my own decisions on who to worship. You start integrating church and state, and soon enough you're going to have a national religion. And people of that religion are going to get special rights, or people NOT of that religion are going to have rights denied them.

Dont get me wrong. I believe in God and am filled with the spirit of Christ, but you're walking down the wrong path brother.

The church should be a leader in your life, if that's what you want and you're a believer. For the rest of us, church has no business with our lives. Religion is a personal thing, and the faith a person has or doesn't have is his own business and only. One person, during his lifetime, can be born as Christian and stay Christian, or convert to atheism or other religion. Throught all this, in the eyes of the state he should remain the same. One can live his/her life following his set of morals, but he/she can't enforce them into others using state as a device.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jesus when was asked about the relationship between religion and state, he sayed : "Give to Ceasar those that belong to Ceasar, and to God those that belong to God".(I can't translate it exactly to english). What the hell does religion have to do with government. Government is a device that enforce laws to society, what good is faith if it's enforced to you?

Although I'm an atheist, I believe that Christians should try to listen more to their own leader, because he said some of the most remarkable things in human history. He said "love each other" and "don't judge others if you don't want to be judged yourself".

I'm confused.

Homosexuality has been observed in the wild in dozens of different species, from swans to octopuses. Could you explain, then, your basis for thinking its "unnatural"?

Ok, so god tells you it's bad. This is your opinion, and it's your right to have one. I just don't think it's appropriate to push your opinions and beliefs upon other people.

I have heard different interpretations from different religious friends. The bible can be interpreted differently. I suspect what your saying is the general concensus among the religious. So thank you for clarifying. That does moot my point about non religious people marrying.

Now this is completely objective, and it really sounds like your saying this as fact, which it isn't. Long before christianity, in the times of the greeks and ancient asian cultures, homosexuality was abundent and considered as natural as men and women being together. It was shunned away by the westeren religions, and that is what it's less common now adays. From what I've been told, same sex feels just as good as hetero sex. So obviously it's as natural as sex.

You do realize you're human being, and being that, you can be wrong. So why wouldn't you want to force your beliefs upon anybody? If church and state were integrated, people would be forced to confrom to the moral standards of the church, not their own. This isn't what freedom is about. This mentality is scary.
I think you have the rigth to have this thought, but I completely disagree with it, and I would be willing to fight and die to prevent something such as this.
